My first inclination is to blame it on the fashion industry because after all, they are the ones who do all this marketing and make us feel as if we must-have it and you-won’t-be-cool-if-you-don’t-have-it. But at the same time I feel that we make our own choices in life. Some women choose to starve themselves to have that “it” bag. Doesn’t that sound a bit odd?
The reason it disturbs me so much is because women should not base their self-worth according to what handbag or pair of shoes they wear. Of course, it does make you feel like a million bucks, but what’s better - feeling like a million bucks and being in debt a million bucks or feeling like a million bucks and actually having a million bucks? Seems like a pretty easy choice to me.
Yet, we’ve given into this lifestyle that we have to have it now. Ok, if you have money to blow, sure go right ahead. Buy whatever you want. You deserve it, sister. However, if you’re eating by candlelight because the electricity got shut off....Oh, but you have a fabulous new Louis Vuitton bag, eh? Puh-lease.
You’re probably thinking I’ve been watching too much Suze Orman. Actually, I have! Her new book came out today: Women & Money: Owning the Power to Control Your Destiny
