Maria's Soapbox: Money & Fashion

There’s an issue that has been bothering this past year. I read and hear all these stories about women who will spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on a designer item, yet they can’t even pay their bills?

My first inclination is to blame it on the fashion industry because after all, they are the ones who do all this marketing and make us feel as if we must-have it and you-won’t-be-cool-if-you-don’t-have-it. But at the same time I feel that we make our own choices in life. Some women choose to starve themselves to have that “it” bag. Doesn’t that sound a bit odd?

The reason it disturbs me so much is because women should not base their self-worth according to what handbag or pair of shoes they wear. Of course, it does make you feel like a million bucks, but what’s better - feeling like a million bucks and being in debt a million bucks or feeling like a million bucks and actually having a million bucks? Seems like a pretty easy choice to me.

Yet, we’ve given into this lifestyle that we have to have it now. Ok, if you have money to blow, sure go right ahead. Buy whatever you want. You deserve it, sister. However, if you’re eating by candlelight because the electricity got shut off....Oh, but you have a fabulous new Louis Vuitton bag, eh? Puh-lease.

You’re probably thinking I’ve been watching too much Suze Orman. Actually, I have! Her new book came out today: Women & Money: Owning the Power to Control Your Destiny

Anew Micro Exfoliant Review and Beauty Rituals

A friend who sells Avon gave me the Anew Micro-Exfoliant to try out. Now, I don’t have much of a daily beauty “ritual” other than to wash my face with soap and water and apply cocoa butter afterwards. Cocoa butter works wonders, by the way. However, I thought I’d give the exfoliant a go...

I’ve been using it about once a week for the past month and yes, my face does feel a bit smoother, but I don’t know if the difference is in the use of the exfoliant or the cocoa butter. I’d like to know if you’ve tried the Anew Micro-Exfoliant and what your results are!

They say that your skin changes after you turn 30 and up until now I didn’t really believe that. Actually, in a way I still don’t believe it. I think that whatever you ate in your 20’s catches up with you in your 30’s. In essence, you are what you eat!

Do you have a beauty ritual you’d like to share?

Burberry On My Mind...

I never thought I’d fall in love with an all-white purse, but by-Golly I do love this purse by Burberry. If you know me, you know my love for handbags ;) The Manor bag is part of the Icons Collection and is available at the Burberry website. It’s quilted leather and very rich looking, no? What I really like about it is that it isn’t the typical signature plaid purse that we’ve seen hundreds of women carry.

Since we’re on the subject of Burberry, I also came across this adorable girls plaid jacket. A great piece to wear right now and to take into the spring season! Available at Raffaello.

The World's Most Expensive Mascara

I just came across the Hcouturebeauty.com website and discovered the most expensive mascara I've ever known of. It's called the "Socialite Mascara" and it costs a whopping $589. Yes, you read right, my dear fashionista. That's $589. It's available in black and brown and you receive 1 year of lash concierge with it - which means you get a complimentary refill tube of the mascara every three months.

The company was started by Ms. Taysha Valez and I love the philosophy (from the website):

"Ms. Valez seeks to educate women on how to become their own biggest fan. This entails being comfortable in her own skin...in fact, loving their own skin, while exuding the intelligence and beauty

...Ms. Valez will just be there to guide them through the natural process, while operating a profitable luxury lifestyle empire."

“It only becomes fashion when the woman puts it on”

Those are the words of Oscar de la Renta in this exclusive interview with Coutorture. It’s a great interview and I love, love, love the collection. Of course, Oscar comes with grace and elegance. It also looks like fur is going to be a big thing for the fall....

What Oscar says is true, no woman is “loyal” to one designer. It is a challenge for designers to make sure that they get your attention and Oscar definitely has done that...

Day 2 of Fashion Week: So Much to See!

Fashion Week 2007 is in full swing and if you hop on over to Coutorture, you’ll find tons of coverage, photos, videos, and various commentary from fashion bloggers that are and aren't in New York. It’s mind boggling, I know. Can you imagine what it would be like to be there? Unfortunately, I have family obligations, so I wasn’t able to make it...*sigh*

Check out my thoughts over at The Runway Scoop:
Pictured here is an outfit by Alice Roi that I could definitely picture myself wearing...but can I pull off those shoes?
