I Dream of Ballet Flats

When I was a young diva I wanted to take ballet lessons, but my parents insisted that I learn piano. So, piano it was but it didn’t stop me from dreaming about pink tutus and ballerina shoes. I ended up checking out a book from the library about ballet and taught myself how to pirouette - but that’s another story...

Ever since then I’ve had a love affair with ballet flats and every spring I go on the hunt for the perfect ballet flat. This spring it seems as if everyone is sharing in my love affair, so I wanted to share a few of them that have caught my eye...Cole Haan - Women's Air Maye Ballet

For something causal and simple, I came across this
leather ballet flat by Cole Haan
. I don’t know if you know just how comfortable Cole Haan shoes are! They’re very cushioned with the Nike Air technology, so you could practically walk all day in Cole Haan shoes.

Add a little shine to your outfit with these Tapeet Elastic Ankle Strap Ballet Flat. They’re fun and dainty-looking...

The Beauty Product I Can't Do Without Now

I used to feel that I couldn’t live without mascara, but I think that has changed when I realized that lip gloss is something I couldn’t walk out of the house without putting it on first. Besides, it's warm here in Cali and my mascara keeps me lookin' like a raccoon. (If you can recommend a good waterproof mascara I'll love you forever).

Anyhow, your whole look changes when you put on lip gloss. Suddenly you’ve become this hot, sassy chica - especially if you’re wearing some stylish sunglasses.

What I love is that e.l.f. has hyper-shine lip gloss for only a buck! Yes, $1, dear fashionistas. Who can beat that?

A Cute Outfit a Day Takes the Blues Away

Marilyn Kirschner said something over at Daily Fashion Report that is worthy of noting:

“I’m one who believes fervently that life is too short and too precious NOT to dress up every day (regardless of what it is you’re doing or where you’re going). And by ‘dress up’ I don’t mean cocktail suits and gowns. It’s not just about looking good and putting thought into your outfits sporadically, for special occasions (black tie events, red carpet entrances, grand parties, benefits), but expressing yourself through your clothing and accessory choices on daily basis.”

As I sit here in my pajamas and tousled hair, I feel just a wee bit blah. I didn’t listen to that little voice inside my head that told me throw on something nice even though I would be inside all day writing and because I didn’t listen, I just didn’t feel all that inspired.

Do you know that feeling when you put on a cute outfit and throw on lip gloss that makes your face shine? Doesn’t it make you feel more energized and ready to take on the world? That’s what I missed today. But it’s not too late! (Getting off the chair to comb my hair...)

Being a Fun and Unique Fashionista

Semi Precious Gemstone Beaded RingBeing wrapped up in all the Fashion Weeks for the fall collections, one tends to forget about the present season. We’ve had some rainfall here in Southern California, but not enough to damper our spring spirit!

For those of you who don’t know, I have my own jewelry line called Jewelry by Maria. I’ve been busy the past week working on adding more spring pieces and getting out of my jewelry making rut. I tend to get caught up in one style and forget that I have the capability of making something truly fun and unique - like this sculptured semi-precious gemstone beaded ring made of freshwater pearl, rhodonite, garnet, and crystal beads wire rapped around a cha cha ring. Available at my Etsy shop for $29.

After all, don’t we all want to be fun and unique this spring?

Thoughts on Diet Pills and Weight-Loss Programs

I understand the desire to lose weight - especially for health reasons - and I do believe that women should be more fit. However, I’ve grown skeptical of all these products like diet pills and weight loss programs that offer all these promises that you’ll lose weight.

I once saw a show that featured a company that sold diet pills via infomercials. Come to find out they were exaggerating results and the before and after pictures they showed were Photoshopped. Now, of course, I know that all companies that offer weight-loss products are not all the same....

With that said, I’ve been asked to review a product called LiquiLean which claims to help stimulate your metabolism so that your body increases the number of calories it burns. Instead of a pill, you take this liquid through a spray. Let’s hope that it tastes good!

What I would like to see is a list of the ingredients that LiquiLean is made of before I actually order the product. I’m not allergic to anything, but for someone who is, this type of information would be good to have on the website when you’re describing the product. Also, having an 800 number to contact the company would also be good being that some people don’t want to pay for a long distance call to get more information.

What I do like about this company is that they offer a compensation plan if you decide to become a rep and sell their products.

Have you used LiquiLean? I’d love to hear your feedback...Leave a comment below!

A Happier You Means A More Beautiful You

I could write all day about how one could take better care of their skin. Every day I come across tips on how we could become more beautiful if we use such and such product, but in reality, all those things are not going to make us prettier if we are not happy within. The San Diego Chiropractic blog says this about inner beauty and happiness:

“...the most beautiful thing of all to me is a happy face. When we look at someone, we can see how they feel. If someone is pain free and full of life, we can see it. If someone is full of pain, they grimace, and even if they try to smile, we can still see the truth.”

Having all the finest clothes and expensive beauty products can sure make you look good and polished, but real beauty - true beauty - starts from the inside. Take some time out and pamper yourself. Start a journal, work out all your insecurities, and simply get to know yourself on a deeper level. Make time to just relax!

Most of all, just love yourself for who you are and stop trying to be like someone else! Many women spend so much time chasing ideal beauty, but little do they know that if they just spent more time working on being a happier person, they would shine brighter than any star celebrity ;)

Stylish Phones For the Fashionista On the Go

I’m on the hunt for a new cell phone, but I’m torn between buying a cell phone because it looks “pretty” and buying a cell phone that will meet my needs. I see all these pink phones on the market and women carrying them around like they’re the latest “it” accessory. I think to myself, “Oooh, I want one of those too!” This is unlike me to think this way as I usually go against the crowd, but shoot, I want something fun and fancy...

I did buy those rhinestones that you can stick on your cell phone and even added a cell phone charm (by the way, I’ll be add adding cell phone charms to my Etsy shop soon). However, it doesn’t quite do it for me.

Well, then I heard about one of those Verizon cell phones - the onc called the “LG Chocolate” phone. Of course, that caught my attention because of the word “chocolate”. What girl doesn’t like chocolate, right? And I have to say, LG knew exactly what they were doing when they named that phone. I first heard about it on the commercial and thought it would be chocolate colored and perhaps maybe, just maybe you get free chocolate once a month with purchase? Ha! I went to to check it out... I do like that it can play music files - which means I wouldn’t have to buy an iPod.

Then there’s the sleek and stylish Blackberry which would be very useful for the fashionista or fashion blogger on the go. I’d love to have the ability to check my email and do some blogging while waiting in line at the grocery store or at the hair salon.

One thing I will never, ever do no matter how much money I have - is buy one of those designer phones for thousands of dollars. I’d rather buy some stock in Guess or Coach - companies that are doing pretty good these days ;)

Update 1/16/07: I came across this video of the Prada phone via Fashionising

Go Effortlessly Chic With Spring Dresses

I’m in love with spring! The bees are a buzzin’ and the pink blossoms are on full display in the front yard ;) And yes, it’s time to go dress shopping, ladies!

Being the boho-type gal that I am, I gravitate toward long, flowy dresses and this one by
Nieves Lavi
takes my breath away. It’s strapless so you can show of that pretty tan and toned muscles - that is, if you’ve been keeping to your New Year’s goal of getting in shape!

Nieves Lavi Strapless Bow Dress

For those of you who like to keep it simple - which I like to do sometimes, then this
Marc by Marc Jacobs
soft, cotton dress with jacquard blossom detail may suit your fancy. Effortlessly chic, I must say!

Image Is Not Everything

In doing some research for “Philadelphia rhinosplasty” today, I came across this blog called “Beauty - Image is Everything”. I personally don’t think that image is “everything”. This may be the motto for those who feel that outer appearances rule, but sometimes when you meet somebody who on the outside seems “perfect” you’ll find that when you dig a little bit deeper, they’re not so perfect after all. They’re lifestyle isn’t so glamorous - as many of us learned when watching The Devil Wears Prada. By the way, I just watched that movie a couple weeks ago. Yeah, I’m a bit late ;)

So, the next time you look at somebody who seems to have the “perfect” image and you start to feel envious of their life, stop and look at your own life and count your blessings! You’re perfect in your own way...

Fashion Goes High-Tech

Who would have ever thought it would come to this? The wireless and technology industries have made their way into the fashion industry. I just found out about the “Fashion in Motion Runway Show” via Cell Phone Observer. The show will feature the latest fashion-friendly innovations and will take place March 27-29 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando.

Well, I should have guessed. If Balenciaga can come out with high-tech looking spring wear, then it’s only natural that scientists would start to incorporate technology into fashion. Let’s just hope they don’t have to call in an Orlando cosmetic surgeon if something goes haywire.

How To Get That Celebrity Look

I consider myself a pretty frugal person and I love, love finding a good bargain. It’s just like winning the lottery! Prime example: I went to Marshall's the other day and bought a jacket, a dress, two tops, and a bag of chocolates for $16. Yes, friends, $16!

One blog that I like to check out is Frugal Fashionista - a photo blog with pictures of celebrities and how you can get the same look with inexpensive pieces. Frugal Fashionista is certainly a specialist in the photo blogging arena. Now if we could find a Toronto rhinoplasty specialist on a budget ;)

I particularly like Jessica Alba’s style because we have very similar tastes in clothing. Check out the Frugal Fashionista’s recommendations for Jessica’s outfit.

Baby Phat Golden Goddess...Luxurious!

Baby Phat Golden Goddess
I’ve known women who buy perfume simply for the design of the bottle and when I was in the store the other day the Baby Phat Golden Goddess perfume bottle caught my fancy. Glamorous. Gorgeous. I took a whiff and mmmm - luxurious! It actually smells good. I can’t describe the scent - only to say that it’s not overwhelmingly strong. Ya’ know, some perfumes are so strong that you need a rhinoplasty nose job just to get rid of the scent!

I read this review over at FabSugar and learned that Baby Phat Golden Goddess has champagne, chocolate and caramel gourmand notes in it. Well, no wonder I love it so much ;)

In A Style Rut?

Sometimes even the most fashionable gal can get into a style rut. Because I work at home, I tend to get into a rut myself and find that I wear the same pair of jeans two or even three days in a row! Yikes! I was in the grocery store a couple weeks ago and saw someone I knew from middle school. I swear, she looked exactly the same - feathered hair and all.

So, how can you get out of a fashion rut?

Sometimes it’s good to get out of your element. Whenever I head into downtown San Diego to do some writing, I often wander through the shops and sometimes even a tattoo gallery to get inspiration for different styles of dress.

Fashionista Til I Die has some tips to revamp your wardrobe...

Here's a book I personally recommend: The Lucky Shopping Manual: Building and Improving Your Wardrobe Piece by Piece

The Fountain of Youth

The other day Oprah had a special on “Aging Brilliantly” and had Diahann Carroll, Geena Davis, and Nora Ephron on her show to tell their stories and share some tips. I was surprised to know that Diahann Carroll is 71 years old! The woman looks absolutely gorgeous for her age and although she didn’t openly admit it, she says that she is all for plastic surgery. (By the way, if you’re interested in plastic surgery, check out this plastic surgery blog).

Although I’m still pretty young, I still feel like I’m in my early 20’s. My birthday is coming up and most women my age would probably consider themselves “over the hill”. I feel that I’m finally blooming into the person I was meant to become. People still mistake me for being 25 and I sure as heck am not going to argue with them *wink*

What’s my secret to looking young? I think Oprah mentioned this...but, my secret is having a good attitude about everything and not stressing over anything! It also helps to be loved by a very awesome guy who has a great attitude as well ;) You can use all those anti-aging products all day every day, but if you’re constantly stressing out all the time, nothing is going to help!

Buying Beauty Products: Who To Trust?

Almost Pretty has a good post about how the beauty industry works. I’m sure being a beauty editor can be quite nerve-wracking. All these companies try to woo you into plugging their product, but what if their product sucks? Do you promote it? Do you not promote it? I personally don’t buy things that beauty editors recommend but rely more on what my peers say. Sometimes I do listen to my friends when they recommend a product, but have found that what may work for them doesn’t work for me.
Elf Cosmetics As for determining whether or not a product is going to be good for us, the only way to actually know is to try it ourselves. Many of the cosmetic counters in major department stores do have samples of products - all you have to do is ask. However, what about the stuff we find in Target or Walmart? We can’t try everything, unless you have money like George Lindemann Sr. and can buy whatever you want!

I’m curious to know what makes you want to buy a product. Do you trust what beauty editors say, do you listen to your friends, or do you read beauty blogs? I've created a poll which is located in the sidebar below my profile, so cast your vote now!

Chanel For Men

Men’s designer fashion is something I don’t keep up with, but I feel the need to talk about the latest Chanel show. I came across this picture over at The Ghetto Fashionista and I have to just say one word: Wow - and I’m not even attracted to guys who dress like that. I had heart palpitations and if you’re gay, it’s enough to cause male pattern baldness. What do you think? Yea or Nay?

This is what Fashion Verbatim says about the show: “With tiny strips of paper cascading down the models' shoulders, it looked more like a rock concert than a fashion show. How Lagerfeld.”

A Growing Love: Louis Vuitton Fall/Winter 2007-08

I never really understood what the big deal was about Louis Vuitton - especially their monogrammed accessories. You put your initials on a handbag and people are willing to dish out thousands of dollars for it?

However, finally, finally I get it. Maybe it’s because Marc Jacobs is designing for them now. Whatever it is, I’ve come to really appreciate the brand. I’m in love with the latest collection. Perhaps it’s the oversized berets and pencil skirts that caught my attention - two things I love to wear, by the way.

Pictured here are a few of my favorite looks. Read the runway review over at

The boots give what may be considered a boring dress some umph, eh?

Louis Vuitton is putting the "L" back in Lady...

Like I said earlier, I never got the whole monogrammed look,
but I changed my mind when I saw this purse...

Striving to Be Non-Judgmental

For me, part of becoming a better person and discovering the beauty in others is striving to be a non-judgmental person. It’s been quite a challenge for me, especially when I see women who obviously have had plastic surgery. The old Maria would have labeled these women “fake”, but now I realize that as women we all want the same thing. We just want to feel good and be beautiful. It’s not my place to judge another woman simply by how she looks without even having a conversation with her.

I went to the Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Guide and came upon this interesting statistic: Since 1997 there has been an increase of 444 percent in the total number of cosmetic procedures. Also, if you do a search for “Houston plastic surgery” you come across over a million web pages solely on this topic. What has caused this increase in procedures?

Although I don’t judge women for deciding to get plastic surgery, I do blame the beauty and fashion industries for playing a role in making women feel that if they don’t look a certain way, they will not be considered to be “beautiful“.

America's Next Top Model: Keep Your Dream Alive!

America’s Next Top Model is in its 8th season (you go, Tyra!) and although I missed the first episode, I have to thank God for You Tube because I’m able to catch up on some of my favorite shows. Below is clip from the first episode of ANTM if you missed it as well:

I have to admit that one of the reasons I stopped watching ANTM is because of all the drama that goes on between the girls. I know, I know, it makes for “good television” - whatever that means. What is it about drama that has us addicted to these reality shows?

I just wish these girls would understand that even though they weren’t chosen to continue on doesn’t mean that they just give up their dream. There’s one girl on the show who says that “This is bull”. You can’t be mad, girlfriend. It’s just not the path for you, so find another one to follow! Hello! Look at Jennifer Hudson. She didn’t win American Idol, but look at her now. An oscar winner AND the cover of Vogue! That’s what I’m talking about...

A word of advice for those of you aspiring to become a model: Keep your dream alive and it will happen for you!

Pamper Yourself!

It's the weekend and there’s nothing like some good ole simple relaxation for a beautiful mind and body. It’s our true nature to be relaxed. When you’re stressed out, not only are you less productive, but you don’t smile and we all know that the smile is your best feature ;)

The best way you can pamper yourself is to get a massage. If you’re on a budget you can find a school where you can get a massage from one of the students for fairly cheap.

Another way to de-stress is to soak in a nice, warm bath. has Kneipp Herbal Bath Salts in Eucalyptus that you can put in your bath to get rid of stress and fatigue. Oh, I can just feel the goodness right now!

If you live here in San Diego and want to really, really pamper yourself, you may want to check out this list of the best La Jolla spas. I would love to visit the Gaia Day Spa where they use pure natural ingredients. Real apricot on your face - how divine!

Foxy-Mama Shoes

Chinese Laundry - Women's FoxyI'm on the hunt for a new shoe wardrobe!

One brand that I like not only because of it’s affordable pricing, but the shoes are very stylish and are pretty well-made....and that’s Chinese Laundry. The shoes pictured here are fun, yet they can be worn for professional meetings or a night on the town. They’re pretty sexy with the peep-toe, but in a subtle way.

What I Like About Online Relationships

In the fashion industry most people judge other people by the way they look. Well, on second thought, we all generally look at somebody and immediately form an opinion about that person. We look at a woman who is dressed head to toe in glamour and some of us automatically think that she is all about her looks. Some of us may even feel a twinge of jealousy because she has nice things.

One of the reasons I love blogging and meeting people online is because people get to know the real me before they get to actually meet me in person. As far as dating, I’ve never met any guys that I’ve dated online, but I don’t see any problem with doing that - although I wouldn’t do it right now since I’m already taken ;) I used to think it was weird to date a guy you met online - simply for security issues - but one of my friends met a guy on the internet and he turned out to be a pretty nice guy...One online dating website that I’ve reviewed that is free to join is Check it out and let me know what you think!

But going back to online relationships and meeting people online...whether it be personal or professional, I think it’s fabulous to be able to communicate with thousands of people through a blog or website - even if I’m just wearing pajamas and my nails need some TLC ;) Can someone recommend a good nail lacquer?
