Style Musings

Susie of Style Bubble is someone I admire for her very unique sense of style. Oh, if only I could be so daring as to wear some of the outfits that she does. I was trying to find a word to describe her style and all I could come up with is "eclectic" - Eclectic in a very good way.

You see, out here in San Diego - or California for the most part - you get the same old thing. Flip-flops, jean shorts, and some kind of trendy top. The only time you really see someone wearing heels is when they're going to and from work - and perhaps at the clubs. Needless to say, it's not such an exciting place for fashion. Even "Hollywood" is a bit stale.

However, I shouldn't let that stop me from being me. I'll continue with my boho/urban/flirty style and one day I'll explore the fun side of me just like Susie does. I tend to go for classics and steer away from "trends", although I have found that some of the trendy stuff is pretty cute. I even own two pairs of leggings which I thought I would never wear again.

How would you describe your style?

Pictured here is Susie which I took from her post, "It's too hot to decide..."

7 Steps To a More Beautiful You...Step #4: Thou Shall Not Judge!

I know I haven't been on top of the series that I began a couple weeks ago and I do apologize! For those of you who have just stumbled across this blog, please read the first four steps to a more a beautiful you...

Step #1: Smile
Step #2: Exercise
Step #3: Know That You Are Beautiful

I will continue the series with Step #4... Thou Shall Not Judge!

Judging others by what they wear is something that we see and hear on a daily basis. If you turn on the TV to a channel like E!, you'll find someone making comments about another person's dress. When you open a fashion magazine, there's commentary about "Who wore it better".

I admit that I've even made remarks about someone's attire just because it's different from the "norm". However, I've come to realize that we are all different and each of us has a different way of expressing who we are. Yes, even if someone decides to wear one of those muffin tops - keep your mouth shut! Remember that saying, "If you don't have anything nice to say..."

I remember when that picture of Tyra Banks in her bikini was floating around the internet. Just about every fashion or beauty blog I went to was talking about it. The comments that some people made were just plain mean which made me wonder what insecurities these people had that they felt the need to talk crap about Tyra. In my experience, what I've found is that the most judgmental people are the ones with the biggest insecurities.

So, the next time you feel the need to talk bad about another person, turn around and look at yourself instead. Are you perfect?

Bargain Hunting and a Business Idea

Some of you who have been reading my blog for some time know how much I love bargain hunting. Nothing gives more joy than to find some designer piece of clothing for say, under $30. Places like Nordstrom Rack or the local thrift store are like Disneyland to me. I know that I will always find some kind of treasure by way of a vintage designer piece or a pair of Via Spiga's for under $50. I haven't been scouring the 'net for any websites that offer good deals, although I'm sure that there are many out there. If you know of any, please do share via comments!

However, an idea came to me as I was reviewing this website for liquidation clothing. Hmmm...I could buy a lot of something like wholesale jeans, pick out the ones that I want to keep for myself, and then sell the rest on Ebay or Craigslist! Of course, that would mean that I would have to start another business and I just don't know if I'm up for adding another business under my belt just yet. However, it's a great idea, ya' think? I'm sure many of you fashionistas have already thought of this - so I'm a little slow sometimes!

I know, this may be going a little too far just to get bargain clothing, but I can't help it. It's the hustling entrepreneur in me ;)

Jewelry For the July Birthday Girl!

Happy Birthday to all of you celebrating a birthday this month! If you’re like me, you want to splurge and buy yourself a very nice birthday gift. I was checking out the jewelry over at JewelryVortex.com and came across this very pretty gold ring with ruby settings. For some reason I’m reminded of African queens when I look at this ring. I’ve never been to Africa, but it just looks like something they may have worn back in the day.

Ruby Ring

I browsed the other jewelry that Jewelry Vortex offers and fell in love with these diamond stud earrings. They’re half karat earrings set in 14K solid gold. Retail value is $695, but Jewelry Vortex offers them at $382.

Diamond Stud Earrings

I also love this citrine ring set in 14K white gold. The white diamonds on the side are synthetic. Retail: $351 – JV Price: $203.50

Citrine and White Gold Ring

JewelryVortex has a wide selection of jewelry – from watches and wedding rings to loose diamonds and even men’s jewelry. I know how difficult it can be shopping online for jewelry. However, JewlryVortex does offer a 30-day money-back guarantee on all items except custom made pieces. They also offer free UPS ground shipping as well as free engraving and a free gift box!

7 Steps to a More Beautiful You...Step 3: Know That You Are Beautiful

Many women don't acknowledge their own unique beauty. They're constantly looking at other women and wishing that they could look like them. I know I used to look at fashion magazines and wish that I could be just as pretty as those celebrities or supermodels. What we don't realize that it often takes a team of people to make someone look glamorous. Oftentimes the people we think are "so beautiful" are really not when you get to know them.

When we begin to work on our own inner beauty and embrace the fact that we are just as beautiful as those women we idolize, our self esteem is raised to a higher level. Stop comparing yourself to other people! You are beautiful and divine in your own right and don't let anyone else tell you otherwise!

I came across this article, Take Care of Your Inner Beauty, and loved this part:
"A beautiful woman is like an elegant hand-knotted Persian carpet. Each and every silky, colorful thread of her character, nicely woven into her personality, gives a woman an everlasting beauty and attraction."
Exercise: Look at yourself every morning as you get ready to face the day and say to yourself 10 times: "I am beautiful." Say it with emotion and really feel that it is true because it is!

Fresh and Groovy T-shirts!

During hot, summer days sometimes I just want to throw on a t-shirt and shorts and call it a day. However, I don’t want to throw on just any ole t-shirt…No, the t-shirt has to be expressive and fun!

I recently found out about a company called Vju Cool that sells these pretty inspiring graphic t-shirts. Kindof like a Web 2.0 version of a t-shirt. As an artist, I must say that I’m pretty impressed. These t-shirts make me really want to take up graphic design as a hobby.

One of my favorite designs is this one pictured here. First off, I love any combination of brown and a bright color. Brown and yellow…brown and pink…brown and turquoise…Then we have the butterfly and flower elements thrown in, plus the little baby crawling with a mic in his hand. Can you say original?

Vju Cool offers three different collections of t-shirts: The “Gorgeous” collection, the “Graph” collection, and the whimsical “Dream” collection. The company was founded in Italy by Vju Design graphic studio and the team is dedicated to providing quality products. They even offer a 30 day money back guarantee on all purchases. And if you know me, you know how I’m all about customer service! Best of all, the t-shirts won’t break the bank!

P.S. My fellow fashion blogger-friend, Designer Ella, loves Vju Cool too ;)

7 Steps to Creating a More Beautiful You Part 2: Exercise

This post couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. I was sitting here tonight thinking that for the past five days I told myself that I was going to exercise, but kept putting it off. I’ll do it after I do this…or I’ll wait til it cools down outside.

I feel very guilty. However, I can’t blame anybody else for my decision to procrastinate. I also told myself that I was going put post-its around the house to remind myself to exercise, but that didn’t happen either.

An article over at Lifehack.org tackles this issue and concludes that in order to stay motivated about exercise, one needs to get more sleep:

"Most people fall off the exercise wagon after about three weeks. Their motivation for it crashes when they do not maintain or change to healthy sleeping habits. Without enough sleep, it becomes difficult to get motivated to go out and get proper exercise. In fact, the main excuse for not getting enough exercise is either being “too tired” or having “no time.” Often, it is the combination of both, making it extremely difficult to maintain a balanced approach as taught by these Zen masters."

I usually get about 7-8 hours of sleep every night, however I tend to go to bed very late (around 3 a.m.) which may be part of the problem. When I wake up I still feel a bit groggy and although my first inclination is to hop on the treadmill, I usually follow that with a “Well, I’ll exercise in the afternoon in between writing…”

Another great article I came across is over at Zen Habits: 7 Ways to Build the Exercise Habit. I’ve written down my goal (less fat on my stomach), the deadline (July 31), and the action plan (100 Situps/Crunches per day and workout 3 times a week). I’m going to post this by my bed so it’s the first thing I see when I wake up.

What is your exercise routine? If you don’t have one, why not?

7 Steps to Creating a More Beautiful You Step 1: Smile

People seldom notice old clothes if you wear a big smile. ~Lee Mildon

I know I’ve blogged here about how a smile can be the most important asset you have, but I feel it needs more emphasis because lately I’ve been running into women with sad and distressed faces. I make an effort to acknowledge them and offer a smile hoping that maybe that positive energy will reach them. It’s very disheartening to see a beautiful woman with a frown her face.

Try this exercise every morning as you’re brushing your teeth…Look at yourself in the morning and say to yourself, “I am beautiful. I am happy. My smile is contagious.” Say that to yourself at least ten times.

Another exercise you can try is to close your eyes and think of a time in your life when you were most happy. Maybe it was the first time you owned a designer bag or a memory of a vacation when you felt oh, so, relaxed. Take yourself to that moment and feel that smile come across your face!

Hopefully you will find yourself grinning from ear to ear after doing these exercises. If that doesn’t work, well, then try watching the Sunsilk commercial I posted a few days ago - that should put a smile on your face!

Stay tuned tomorrow for step #2!

Funny Sunsilk Commercial

I think the best way to get people buzzin' about your product is to create a hilarious commercial like this Sunsilk commercial I watched for the first time yesterday....Hil-ari-ous, I say!

It's funny, because I actually see women act this way sometimes!
