The Smokey Eye Look: Brushes and How To Video

One thing I've never really been good at is applying eye makeup. Thank Goodness for the Smokey Eye Kit by Sephora ($42)! I've always loved the dramatic look I see on some women and have wanted to learn how to achieve that look.

The Smokey Eye Kit comes with instructions on how to make your eyes look fabulous. Who knew there were all these different types of brushes to create different effects?!? (Perhaps everyone but me!) I love the little grey pouch the kit comes in - makeup organization is a must!

Because I'm a visual learner, I prefer a video tutorial of how to create that smokey eye look. Here's an excellent video by makeup artist, Sandy Gold...

Relish Beauty: Luxury on Your Skin

Relish Beauty products
Lately we've been hearing many stories about women (and men!) with skin cancer. Part of this is due to an overabundant exposure to sun. This is especially true out here in California where the sun is out about 360 days out of the year!

Then there are all these products on the market nowadays that contain ingredients that are not good for you. As I've said before, I'm pretty particular about what I put on my skin. What I look for and appreciate are beauty products made of natural elements and will also help protect against harmful UVA and ABA rays.

Michele Dispensa, the founder of Relish Beauty products, has begun an anti-cancer crusade to educate people about the dangers of overexposure to sun. Here are some facts to keep in mind:
  • Sunlight contains three types of ultraviolet rays: UVA, UVB and UVC
  • Clouds and pollution do not filter out UV rays. Even on cloudy, cool, or overcast days, UV rays travel through the clouds and reflect off sand, water, and concrete
  • UVA rays penetrate glass/windows
  • Most children rack up between 50% and 80% of their lifetime sun exposure before age 18
  • Even mild sunburn is a first-degree radiation burn
  • Certain medication, such as antibiotics, and cosmetic procedures increase sensitivity to the sun
  • Sunscreen helps prevent premature signs of aging such as fine lines, freckles and wrinkles
  • Most people need at least one ounce of sunscreen to adequately cover their body, which is enough to fill a shot glass
  • Apply sunscreen about 30 minutes before going outside so that a good layer of protection can form. It should be reapplied every 2 to 3 hours.
Michele Dispensa developed a line of beauty products with anti-aging ingredients that provide quality skincare. I was able to try out the Shea Butter Body Lotion (8 oz.), the Shea Butter Lip Balm, the Lip & Face Protector (SPF 15), Daily Advanced Protection (4 oz., SPF 30), and the Daily Protection Moisturizing Sunscreen (4 oz., SPF 15). The products contain elements such as Japanese Green Tea, Ginseng and Licorice, Aloe, Hawaiian Red Marine Algae, Chamomile, and Vitamins A, C and E. They contain no petroleum or mineral oils.

I absolutely love the Shea Butter Body Lotion! For some reason it smells like a blend of almond and honey beeswax. Absolute Luxury with a capital "L"!

You can buy Relish Beauty products online at relishbeauty.com or Amazon.com. They're also sold in specialty boutiques and resorts nationwide such as the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego, Auberge Du Soleil in Napa, and Marilyn Jaeger Skincare in San Francisco.

Luxury and Makeup

Guerlain Kiss Kiss Maxi Shine LipstickGuerlain Kiss Kiss Maxi Shine LipstickCoutorture has started a new feature called "Coutorture Salon" in which fashion and beauty bloggers weigh in on a topic and share their thoughts on their blogs. This week's topic is "Luxury and Accessibility" which is something I've been giving much thought to for the past few months.

I shared my viewpoint on luxury and accessbility over at The Runway Scoop, however, I'd like to point out this very interesting post over at Provocative Thoughts that talks about make-up being a luxury. I do agree with this statement:
It just seems that luxury in the beauty department is simply affordable for a great many of us.
If we take the definition of luxury in its most literal form, then any type of makeup is luxury, isn't it? After all, makeup isn't a necessity in life. We could survive without it.

Beauty Review: Skin MD Natural

I'm one who believes in serendipity - that things come at the perfect time. Prime example: A few weeks ago my scalp was going through some serious issues with dryness and itchiness. I was then contacted by a rep of Skin MD Natural asking if I wanted to sample this medicating lotion - and no, I was not paid for this review! I figured why not try it since over 93% of the ingredients are natural.

I mentioned before that I've been using JASON shampoo and conditioner for my dry scalp. Well, after the shower I then rub just a little bit of Skin MD Natural lotion into my scalp. I've been doing that for the past few weeks and my scalp looks and feels soooo much better. I seriously was about to shave off my hair and just soak my head in oil all day before I started using this lotion!

I also tried it on the balls of my feet where my skin tends to get real dry - especially if I've been walking around in heels all day. All you need is a little bit and it definitely goes a long way...I definitely recommend it.

Donda West and the Effects of Plastic Surgery

I've already shared my thoughts about plastic surgery but the recent shocking news about Donda West's passing has once again opened up the conversation about the risks involved when you undergo surgery.

This article over at The Associated Press says that plastic surgery complications are rare. A good doctor would advise a client about those complications. I applaud the doctor who would not operate on Donda West because of her health history. That tells me that he is a credible doctor who isn't in it just to make money.

I think that there are healthier ways to lose weight and that women should do all those things first before subjecting themselves to plastic surgery.

Here's a Donda West dedication that was on the Ellen Degeneres show today...

Beauty Product Review: Swisa Sensation Spa Dead Sea Facial Peel

Swisa Sensation Spa Dead Sea Facial Peel
Sometimes you find out about beauty products from the most unlikely sources. For instance, it was my boyfriend who introduced me to the Swisa Sensation Spa Dead Sea Facial Peel. One day he walked by one of the distributors in the mall where he was stopped by one of the girls to try it out. Well, he then told me about it and the rest is history...

I've tried many exfoliants, but none of them seem to work. I particularly don't like putting that rough scrub on face. This Swisa facial peel is a clear gel that you just rub in a circular motion on your face and you can literally see the dead skin cells come off! Can you say, "Luxurious!!"? Even those rough pesty white heads come off so easily.

Watch a video demonstration of the product and buy it at the My Swisa website...

What Britney Spears Should Focus On

I'm not one who reads all those celebrity gossip magazines, however I do know that Britney Spears is always a hot topic of conversation. For the longest time I put off talking about her because we're already bombarded with information about her every move (thanks, paparazzi!).

However, she's the best example I could think of. Britney is someone who still hasn't found her inner beauty and this is why I believe she's in the mess.

Britney Spears has shown us what happens when you don't have the confidence or self-esteem to deal with issues in your life. It takes its toll on you emotionally and physically. You go on shopping binges to fill that void you have within. You crave attention so you get out of limos without doing an underwear check.

How do you not expect people to talk about you when you do all these things? A recent article of Britney in Allure Magazine painted a picture of a girl with bipolar disorder.

I think Britney is a great singer and performer and I only wish she would just focus on her music, focus on being a good mother to her kids, and just focus on discovering her own inner beauty.

Just my two cents...

My Cure For Dry, Itchy Scalp and Thinning Hair

"Your hair is starting to look thin in the front. I think you should find something to help that," my boyfriend said to me.

What? That couldn't be! I was in pure denial of the fact that yes, my hair was falling out like a tree sheds its leaves during the fall.

That was about 3 years ago, but now I've come to terms with the fact that I am getting older. My hair is no longer the thick mane it once was. What I realized though that part of the reason it was like that was due to stress and using all those cheap 99 cent shampoos.

I recently started using JASON natural biotin shampoo and conditioner. It's supposed to soothe dry, itchy scalp and help slow down hair loss. The conditioner does make my hair feel softer and it does look like my hair is starting to grow back in. I've also started taking vitamins for healthy hair. I have a ton of those little "baby hairs" now ;)
