The First Ever San Diego Fashion Week

Fashion Week San Diego
I'm pretty excited for this weekend as the first ever Fashion Week is coming to San Diego! I've complained before about the lack of "style" and high-fashion in this city that I live in, so it's time for fashion designers to prove me wrong...

On Friday night, October 3, I'll be attending the runway shows which will take place at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in downtown San Diego and the next day the full collections will be on view for special orders.

If you live in San Diego or will be in town this weekend, make sure to check out the event! Get more info by visiting: www.fashionweeksd.com or check out the blog.

Inner Beauty Quote

DaisiesHere's a great quote to contemplate over the weekend!

"The recipe for beauty is to have less illusion and more Soul, to retreat from the belief of pain or pleasure in the body into the unchanging calm and glorious freedom of spiritual harmony."

Glamorous Hairstyles

Fancy hairstyles and updos have never really been my thing - even when I have a special function to go to. I'd rather just put my hair in a ponytail or just wear it straight and that's it. However, I know that there are many of you who love to get your hair done for evening events. Who says we can't get those glamorous hairstyles like the celebrities on the red carpet?

Well, I wanted to share with you these photos from Uptown, the second district in AG Hair Cosmetics' 2008 editorial collection Architecture...

AG Hair Holiday Hair

AG Hairstyles

My favorite look is called the "Fountain" (top middle). The “Fountain” has that old-Hollywood feel with mid-length, elegant curls that frame the face.

If you use a hair straightener like I do (see my review of the flat iron I use), then I recommend trying AG's "Set It Straight" straightener. It's used mainly for blow drying your hair straight, but I like to put it on before I use my flat iron. I also put on a little after straightening it as well.

Perhaps this holiday season I'll try something new instead of straightening it and putting it up in a boring ponytail! Looking at the photos above has inspired me to be more adventurous ;)

What type of fancy hairstyles do you like?

10 Things About Me

Peace FlowerI just recently started reading Karen's Makeup and Beauty Blog. Such a great blog! Must. Read. Now. Go ahead and visit her site - this post can wait!

You're back now? Great!

Taking cue from Karen's Makeup and Beauty Poll for yesterday, I thought I'd share my answers here...

Mood: Feeling very, very blessed

Fragrance: The Body Shop's Perfume Oil in Vanila...Mmmmm!

Nails: N.Y.C. Nail Glossies in color #243B. They didn't print the name of the color on the bottle, but it's like a royal blue. Something fun and sassy ;)

Sweet tooth: Good ole fashioned chocolate chip cookies with an iced latte!

Celeb crush: Basketball player Kevin Garnett. I have a thing for tall men ;)

Makeup crush: Anything Chanel.

Something you don’t know about me: I played the flute in high school.

Latest makeup or beauty find you’re sharing: Those of you who've been reading this blog know that I've been loving Nars eyeshadows.

Hair: I took it old school today and decided to do a side ponytail. I know...so 80's, but I was being adventurous. Besides, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" by Cyndi Lauper kept playing over and over in my head for some reason!

Goals for the week: Exercise every day. Get ready for the Christmas shopping season by making more jewelry to add to my Etsy shop. Be grateful.

Easy, Breezy, Beautiful...Ellen DeGeneres

Ellen DeGeneres behind the scenes at Cover Girl
If you're an Ellen DeGeneres fan like myself, you may have already heard the big news that she is the new face of Cover Girl. No matter what I'm doing at home during the day, I always take a break to watch the Ellen show. What an inspiring woman! She's a testament to all those naysayers who believe that it's too late to do anything at 50-years-old. Ellen has come a long way and now she's finally hit her prime - a marriage, a successful talk show, and now a Cover Girl model :)

Be on the lookout for the Cover Girl campaign beginning early next year!

Shopping Tip: Buy Timeless Pieces Now

White blazerThe weather in San Diego this past weekend was a bit overcast and a little chilly for most days - which is certainly a nice change from the hot and humid weather we had this summer. I am ready for fall!!

The fall season means that retailers are getting ready for new inventory and putting all their summer stuff on sale! This is the time to shop for timeless pieces that you can get at deep discounts.

As a lover of jackets, I fell in love with this Calvaresi white poplin blazer that is currently on sale for $92.00 at YOOX.com (Originally $368). Although it was part of the spring/summer collection, this is a piece that you can wear in the fall or winter with a pair of black slacks and black patent shoes or jeans and boots.

Shop the End of Summer Super Sale! Up to Extra 75% off on YOOX.COM
Purple Jacket
Being that I love all things purple, I also have my eyes on this purple jacket by Tripp NYC. This jacket used to cost $54, but it's now on sale for $41.95 at Karmaloop.com. Nowadays I'm feeling that purple is the new black, so I say that you can wear this purple jacket with just about anything...but that's just me!

How I Stay Fit

Puma running shoesPart of being a beautiful woman includes taking care of your body by exercising and eating right. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not consistent when it comes to taking care of my own body, but this month I've really been focused on developing a "stay fit" mentality.

One of the things I've been doing to stay fit is walking to the grocery store instead of driving. Of course, I only do this when I need a few things! The store is about 3/4 of a mile away, so I throw on some comfortable shoes (love my Pumas!) and get to walking. Another way I've been exercising is just doing little things throughout the day instead of doing it all in one session. I'll take 10 minute breaks and do a little stretching here...or situps...or squats...anything. Doing this also helps clear my mind - especially when I have writer's block.

One of my goals is to have tight abs by November 1, 2008. I came across this video of a lower-belly workout over at the myLifetime website. If you have a good exercise to flatten that belly, I'd love to hear about it! I'll also be posting my progress every week and sharing the exercises that I do.

By the way, while you're hanging out over at myLifetime, you may want to check out the Beauty & Style tips. There are other features of the website that I like including astrological readings and home & crafts.

Hollywood Glamour: Carolina Herrera and Isaac Mizrahi Spring 2009

If there is anybody who knows how to deliver classy chic, it's Carolina Herrera and Isaac Mizrahi. Their Spring 2009 collections delivered that and more.

I've loved Carolina Herrera ever since I visited her store here in San Diego at the Fashion Valley Mall. All I could think was, classy, classy, classy. If you ever come across one of her stores you must go in. It's a retail experience like no other.

For her latest show Carolina Herrera sent down stunning, effortless, and glamorous pieces for day and evening. Much of the collection was black and white, a color combination that can never go wrong, of course. There was also cream, gold, teal, silver, and that powerful, electrifying persimmon red. What stood out for me were the ruffles. As an aside, I'd like to say that it was interesting to see model Agyness Deyn in this show wearing "grown up" clothes after seeing her in all those Burberry ads.

Carolina Herrera Spring/Summer 2009

Isaac...Isaac...Isaac Mizrahi really got the oohs and aaahs from me. He took it back to the old school with a modern twist. These photos that I have were taken in black and white which gave the show even more of a retro feeling. However, if you'd like to see the collection in color, check out the photo gallery over at Coutorture.

Tyra Banks Takes It All Off...

Tyra Banks Celebrates Her Sept 2008 Cover of Harper's Bazaar...her makeup, that is. If you're a Tyra Banks fan like me, you may have tuned into her show yesterday, the first show of the fourth season!

Tyra trades spots with a viewer who wants to look like a celebrity, so Tyra takes off all her makeup while the viewer gets a huge makeover to look like a cover girl. Tyra even surprises the viewer with a photo shoot - what a transformation!

The takeaway lesson here is that everyone has the potential to look like a celebrity - yes, if we had our own hairdresser and makeup artist. At the same time, celebrities are just everyday people just like you and me. They have their own insecurities they have to deal with.

At the beginning of the show Tyra gives the audience a mirror, red lipstick, and asks them to write down one thing they like about themselves. If I were to write down one thing I like about myself, I would say that I like my eyes. This is an exercise that I challenge you to do as well. What one thing do you like about yourself? Then, every morning when you look at yourself in the mirror, find something else about yourself that you like...

Learn more about the Tyra Banks show...

Pictured here is Tyra celebrating her cover of the September 2008 issue of Harper's Bazaar at the Highbar in New York City.

BCBG Max Azria Spring/Summer 2009 Review

BCBG Max Azria Spring/Summer 2009
BCBG is one of the brands I always look forward to seeing during Fashion Week. Max Azria really knows how to dress the woman and his Spring 2009 collection is evidence of those superior design skills.

It's not that there's anything particularly innovative about the BCBG collection. Azria always manages to keep things simple without any fuss and yes, there is a nod to 90's minimalism apparent in this collection. You can put on one of these pieces and immediately feel beautiful. It's a collection that lends itself to an energy of elegance, sophistication without that air of pretentiousness. The look is natural, flowy and ethereal - a look that actually can be seen in quite a few shows this season.

Some pieces in this spring collection are also reminiscent of the 70's/80's. We get the pant jumpsuits and high-waisted pants. However, most of the collection consists of short dresses that drape the body and pockets, pockets, pockets galore. I'm a big fan of jersey, so this collection was definitely to my liking.

Colors: aqua, vibrant orange, chocolate brown, greys, black, white, and tan

Check out a video slideshow of the Spring/Summer 2009 collection (email subscribers click here to watch)...

Do You Buy Products For the Packaging?

Jamie of The Beauty of Life has posed a question on her blog:

I would have to answer with a resounding Yes! Sometimes, but not very often, I will buy a beauty product just for the packaging. I just found out the other day that Rock & Republic, the brand that brought us those awesome jeans, is launching a collection of cosmetics. I had a brief sixteen-year-old moment when I saw some of the packaging...OMG!

Rock & Republic makeupDecadent is the word I would use to describe the new Rock & Republic makeup collection. The 116-piece premium collection includes lip glosses, brushes, mascara, eye shadows, caffeine-infused tinted primer, and a Swarovski Crystal-embedded bronzer compact (pictured here).

You can find the makeup collection starting September 15th at Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s or RockandRepublicCosmetics.com

What about you? Do you buy beauty products just for the packaging?

Fashion Tip For High-Heeled Fashionistas

This post is dedicated to those of you who are trekking around the streets of New York City going from runway show to runway show in heels. Why you would want to kill your feet in the name of all things fashionable is something I can relate to as I used to stand eight hours in heels when I worked at Nordstrom!

Killer KushionzThis post is also for those of you who get stinky feet when wearing shoes or your feet slide forward in heels...You know that not-so-pretty toe overhang that looks like your shoes are one size too small ;)

Here's a tip: Try "Killer Kushionz" by Foot Petals. Killer Kushionz are adhered inside the shoe and have this nice lavender scent. I've been using them for my black patent heels because the current insoles aren't very comfortable. I have yet to use them for long-distance walking, but so far I like them!

The Foot Petals brand was masterminded by Tina Aldatz Norris and she has many tips for all your foot problems!

High Class, High Style: Rachel Roy Spring 2009

High class. High style. That's the only way that Rachel Roy knows how to create a Spring 2009 fashion presentation. They gathered at the IAC building on Thursday, the day before the official start of Fashion Week. Models posed like art sculptures while onlookers marveled at the chic display of creativity.

What I like about Rachel Roy's presentation is that she used models from different ethnic backgrounds - although I would have liked to see them in all shapes and sizes :) The collection has so many details, texture and color to it. My favorite piece was the white long-sleeved dress with the black writing on it. I also loved the short purple dress with the criss-cross at the neck.

For more pictures of the presentation, check out this slideshow I created...(Email subscribers click here to watch it at YouTube).

PZI Jeans Giveaway

PZI JeansNext to spring, my favorite season out of the year is fall. Oh, I do love fall! The weather starts to cool down, the leaves change color, and of course new fashion choices to explore! I also love that I can start wearing denim again :) I live about 20 minutes east of downtown San Diego where the weather is a little bit warmer, so I usually wear dresses and shorts during the summer.

Oh, yes, I'm excited about being able to layer clothing, put on jackets, and wear jeans! Which brings me to the latest giveaway...

It's your chance to win a pair of PZI jeans!

PZI is an Atlanta, Georgia-based company that is redefining the meaning of fit. I'm sure you've had that jean shopping experience where you try on a dozen pairs of jeans and can't find even one pair that fits properly. (Been there, done that!)

PZI JeansPZI Jeans offers a wide selection of denim – from straight and boot cuts to capri and denim skirt styles. These jeans are designed to eliminate gaps at the waist which are created from going up a size to accommodate the hips and rear while neglecting the waist. In other words, if you have full hips and a little junk in your trunk, then PZI jeans are for you! They're available in sizes 4-16, with inseam options of 31”, 34”, 36” and 38” to eliminate inseam alterations.

Claire Jason, Vice President and Creative Director of PZI Jeans, has this to say:

“PZI Jeans enhances and flaunts a woman’s natural and shapely body. Our brand celebrates a cross-section of women. When our customers buy a pair of our jeans, they are getting the whole package: a defined derriere and smooth fit throughout the leg. Our jeans hug you in all the right places.”

PZI Jeans are available for purchase at select MACY’S stores nationwide, retail chain stores and other fine retailers and boutiques. PZI Jeans are also available at www.PZIJeans.com.

So here are the rules to enter this giveaway:
  • Leave a comment and share with us your last jean shopping experience.
  • Send me an email at maria [at] salondemaria [dot] info to let me know that you've commented. The reason for this is so that I can have your email to contact you if you're the winner. If you leave your email in the comment form, I'm not able to see it. (It's a Blogger.com thing. If anyone from Blogger is reading this, maybe you guyscan fix that!)
  • Giveaway is open to everyone around the world
  • Entries must be received no later than Friday, September 12, 2008 at 11:59 PM (PST)
  • One winner will be announced here on this blog on Saturday, September 13. The winner will also be contacted via email.

It's That Time of Year Again...New York Fashion Week!

I got up at the crack of dawn this morning and one of the first thoughts that went through my mind was Yay! Fashion Week! I was going to attend this season, but now that I'm not "officially" writing for The Runway Scoop anymore, it's a challenge to get press credentials. Anyhow, expect to see at least a couple posts each day as I will be offering my opinion on shows - with of course, beauty product reviews, plus fashion and beauty tips thrown into the mix now and then.

To start off the week, I'd like to share with you Sarah Conley's first video for Fashion Week. The other day I introduced to you Sarah's project, On the Plus Side, in which she'll be sharing her experiences as a "plus size" woman at Fashion Week. In this video Sarah shares her thoughts about body image and what she'll be doing for the next week...(email subscribers click here to watch the video).

If you'd like to get to know more about Sarah, check out her interview on BlogTalkRadio this past Sunday with Spectra.net.

P.S. Make sure to check Coutorture daily for backstage coverage of NYFW...videos, photos, and all that good stuff!

A Blue Eyeshadow Adventure

"Don't be too serious, it's only makeup." --Francois Nars

NARS Duo Eyeshadow in "Persepolis"That's going to be my makeup mantra from now on! I've rarely ventured from my somewhat conservative nature when it comes to makeup - especially eyeshadow. However, when I received the NARS duo eyeshadow in "Persepolis", I figured What the heck? I used to think that blue eyeshadow was for disco queens in the 70's and 80's. Remember Mrs. Roper from the TV sitcom, Three's Company? She was really diggin' that blue eyeshadow, eh?

There was one time in middle school when I snuck into my mom's makeup bag and tried her blue eyeshadow. Well, she caught me using it and cried, "You look like a clown!" So that instantly gave me a complex about using anything but brown eyeshadow. Needless to say that I probably didn't even know how to apply blue eyeshadow properly. Hence, the clown face.

They say that blue eyeshadow is supposed to be "big" this fall season. And so my adventure with blue eyeshadow was reignited today. Once upon a time I was told by a Mary Kay rep that "...if all else fails, just blend..." And that is just what I did...

I really need a tutorial! I found this tutorial on silver and blue eyeshadow courtesy of Francine of Frantastic Makeup...

NARS Duo Eyeshadow in "Isolde"In the meantime I'll continue with colors that I know, like the NARS duo eyeshadow in "Isolde". I really like how it shines, but it's not too glitter-y.

Check out more of my NARS makeup reviews.

Christian Louboutin and the Oh-La-La of Designer Heels

This past weekend was very relaxed as I spent most of it watching Sex and the City episodes on DVD! There was an episode where Carrie was wearing a pair of white Louboutin heels (I believe it was an episode in Paris) and as she walked down the street, I thought how empowering it would feel to wear a pair of Louboutin heels. I myself have never been able to part with $300+ for a pair of shoes, but I'm sure it may feel like sheer bliss to be able to do so without hesitation ;)

However, don't get me wrong. There are so many other ways that women can make themselves feel empowered - like helping the needy, finding fulfillment and meaning in their lives through their work, or finding their true purpose in life. I'm not saying that you should go out and buy a pair of Louboutin shoes just to feel good. But there's something about wearing a pair of well-made, designer shoes that makes you feel Oh-la-la! And let's not forget the great handbag to go along with it...

The new Christian Louboutin's have arrived at Saks and I'm really, really lovin' these black boots (click on image for details)...very classic and timeless. Let's say I kept these boots for 10 years - then it would only cost $130 a year to have them! When you look at it that way, then they're definitely worth the investment, eh?
