Fall 2009 Fashion Trend: Dark and Heavy

The Fall 2009 runway shows are taking place in Milan and so far I've browsed through photos from the Burberry, Gucci, Iceberg, and Gianfranco Ferre shows.

One thing I noticed immediately from these runway shows was the lack of color in the collections. Cathy Horyn of The New York Times observed the "heaviness" of Italy's fashion in Milan: That Overstuffed Feeling. I have to agree. But then again, it is fall and I think designers are anticipating a very cold winter?

As a lover of handbags, I couldn't help but notice the handbags from the Gucci show...

Backstage Beauty Tips From "Dancing with the Stars"

Hairstylist Russell Latham backstage during Dancing with the Stars TourFor me, dance is a way to release, let go, relax, and get exercise. I think people who dance alot are happier people overall. They have that *twinkle* in their eyes that makes them very attractive. Make an effort to get off your booty every once in awhile and just dance!

Well, the TV show, "Dancing With the Stars", has a new season coming up (Monday, March 9th on ABC) and I'm anticipating seeing another round of fun and entertainment. I also love checking out the hairstyles and costumes the dancers wear.

Have you ever wanted to achieve the same hairstyles as the dancers in DWTS? During the Dancing With The Star’s Winter ‘08/’09 National Tour, Russell Latham and Hairstylist Robert Wilson shared their tips to achieve that star style with ease:

Dancing with the Stars Karina Smirnoff with Hairstylist Russell LathamVoluminous Curls

Clean hair was blown dry with a tiny spritz of White Sands Liquid Texture Medium Hold. Before setting with a curling iron, a tiny bit more Liquid Texture Medium Hold was applied, curling the dancers’ tresses in the desired pattern of the night and clipped. Upon returning from makeup, the clippies were removed and hair would be teased at the root. Curls were then fingered out into gorgeous waves, securing the look with White Sands Infinity Hair Spray. As each dancer arrived backstage before the show, White Sands Stuck Up was applied to lock in that hairstyle for the rest of the night.

Bone Straight Tresses

Clean wet hair was lightly sprayed with White Sands Liquid Texture Medium Hold and blow dried straight. White Sands Infinity Hairspray was then applied, flat ironing this into the hair to remove frizz and create shine. Next, a dab of White Sands Smudge was rubbed between the hands and run through the hair to help keep it straight, shiny, and full of movement. Finally, on set, an application of White Sands Stuck Up was added to the front top of the dancer’s hair to keep it from falling in their face as they danced.

Questionable Hairstyles

The 80's had some terrible hairstyles, but what are the worst hair trends of all time? Total Beauty put together a list of celebrities wearing some questionable hairstyles...

Back in the 80's I should have invested in the company that created Aqua Net because my friends and I probably went through thousands of cans throughout grade school! I'm sure many of you who grew up in the 80's can relate ;)

Beauty Forecast: Top 10 Ingredients Used in Beauty Products in 2009

I'm sure many of you have noticed this "go green" trend happening not just in the beauty industry, but in all industries. Being healthy and more conscious about the environment has become a way of life.

Nowadays with skin cancer becoming more prevalent, I think it is important to be aware of what is in our beauty products.

According to Pierce Mattie, this year the focus will no longer just be about who is green or all natural, but about specific ingredients and their benefits. The beauty PR firm came up with a list of the top 10 ingredients that consumers will hear more about throughout 2009:

Argan Oil: This incredible skin care miracle, known for being one of the richest natural sources of Vitamin E with 80% essential fatty acids, has been a beauty secret of Moroccan women for centuries. It can be dually used on skin and in hair for its high level of antioxidants and ability to replenish hair and skin’s natural moisture.

Acai: Sometimes referred to as “The Fountain of Youth,” this Brazilian berry contains antioxidants, amino acids, essential omegas, fibers and protein that positions itself as a formidable fighter in anti-aging products. Acai can be found across the board in skin care, cosmetics and hair care products.

Goji Berries: This nutrient-rich berry, well known as Wolfberries in the Himalayas, has often been called a “super food” due to its abilities to fight free radicals and boost the immune system. While there are no inherent benefits of Goji in fragrance, that hasn’t stopped perfumers from including this sweet yet tart scent into their perfumes.

Baobab: Rich in riboflavin, niacin and vitamins C, A, D and E, baobab has incredible anti-aging properties although you won’t just find it in creams and moisturizers, but also in exfoliating scrubs and hair care.

Acerola: Ingredients high in Vitamin C, like acerola, are being used more often due to their ability to even out skin tone and brighten complexion. Skin care brands will be using acerola more to target those who have issues with skin redness and inflammation.

Blueberry: Chock full of amino acids, vitamins, antioxidants and essential fatty acids, blueberries are another super food that will be used to fight aging in beauty products. Also known as a “super fruit,” blueberries have long been known for its ability to revitalize the skin; it was just a matter of time before beauty brands began to incorporate it more into their skin care products.

Probiotics: Last year Pierce Mattie PR termed probiotics a “buzzword” among beauty brands, but now those brands are delivering more than just buzz with this sister category to Cosmeceuticals and Nutraceuticals. Probiotic skin care will be branded as another “clinical-like” line of products, which beauty consumers tend to lean towards as science-based.

Palmitoyl Tripeptide-3: This Cosmeceutical that is becoming found more often in anti-aging products to fight fine lines and wrinkles will be even more prevalent in 2009. Products that contain Palmitoyl Tripeptide-3 will be branded as a temporary alternative to cosmetic procedures.

Myrrh: With the increasing popularity of Ayurveda in the Unites States, this ancient ingredient is also resurging in perfumes and skin care products. The rich royal resin with the slight vanilla fragrance so popular in incense also stimulates circulation and has lifting effects.

Turmeric: A highly regarded ingredient in India, Turmeric is widely known for its medicinal properties. Turmeric will be found in acne-related creams and lotions, as it is an antiseptic and can aid in preventing and removing blemishes. It will also be found in hair removal products as well as in the formulation of sunscreen in more natural products as well.

The Beauty That Is Queen Latifah

Queen Latifah at 2009 OscarsMillions of us watched the Academy Awards the other night where the celebrities looked like their fabulous selves...

Queen Latifah was one of the stars that stood out to me. She was just genuinely happy and having fun being her beautiful self. Her one-shoulder dress by Georges Chakra was very flattering.

Makeup artist Sam Fine was the mastermind behind Queen Latifah's gorgeous beauty look. Sam says, "I wanted to create a classic look that I wouldn't look back on in four years and regret."

So, what products did Sam use?

Eye Makeup:

* CoverGirl Eye Enhancers 4-Kit in Drama Eyes
* CoverGirl Eye Enhancers 1-Kit in Golden Sunrise
* CoverGirl LineExact Liquid Liner in Very Black
* CoverGirl LashBlast Luxe in Black Platinum

Travel Tip: Buy Stylish Luggage

Dots Spring 4-Piece Hardside Luggage SetI'm on the hunt for new stylish luggage. My poor luggage has been beaten up and thrown around from all the traveling I did a couple years ago.

One travel tip that I have is to buy luggage that stands out from the crowd. Nothing is more frustrating than trying to find black-colored luggage when everyone else has black luggage!

Your luggage doesn't have to be "stylish" per se, but at least buy luggage that has some color to it...

I like this 4-piece luggage set by International Traveller which is available at It's fun and colorful!

What do you think? Yay or nay?

    Twitter In the Fashion World

Twitter badgeWhat I love about all this technology that we have nowadays is that we can get information at the speed of light. We can find out what's happening in the fashion world in realtime!

Right now I'm sitting on my bed writing up this post, but I know exactly what's happening at this moment at the Diesel show in New York City.

    How is that possible?

Well, as a Twitter user, I can do a Twitter search for the tag "#NYFW" and see what other Twitter users are "tweeting" from the tents at Bryant Park. Click here to see the stream of tweets in realtime.

If you're a fashion (or beauty) blogger and you're not on Twitter yet, I highly recommend it because it's another great way to drive traffic to your blog besides connecting with and getting to know others. As you can see from the screenshot below, I shared a link to this blog in my "tweet".

If you're already on Twitter, let's connect! You can follow me: @studio747. (Send me a Direct Message a.k.a. "DM" after you follow me so I can follow you back!)

    Fall/Winter 2009 Fashion: Runway Reviews

Nicole Miller Runway Fall 2009 FashionNew York Fashion Week is in full effect and I'll be joining the many fashion bloggers who will be sharing her/his thoughts on one of the biggest fashion events of the year.

Fall fashion has always been my favorite, however, to be quite honest, I'm not too impressed with what the designers have put out for Fall/Winter 2009. However, it is only Monday and there are many more designers who have yet to send their creations down the runway.

From what I've seen so far, the only designer whose clothes I would consider wearing is Donna Karan's DKNY collection. I've been a fan of DKNY for over 15 years and although it's quite basic, I still like it.

Maybe it's this big and slouchy trend for Fall 2009 that I don't find quite appealing...

    Short Hairstyles: Yay or Nay?

Here's the latest hairstyle feature from
    Celebrities' Super Short Hairstyles

Stars like Rihanna and Paris Hilton take it all off -- their hair that is

It's no surprise that so many stars opt for super short bobs and pixie cuts. Aside from being low-maintenance, a short style puts more focus on the face and adds more attitude to their overall look. Check out which celebrities make cropped hair look gorgeous... and tempting. (If you feel the urge to reach for the scissors after viewing their photos, we highly recommend you get a professional to do the cutting.)

    See the looks

I've been thinking about cutting my hair short - perhaps a bob like Victoria Beckham's old hairstyle. I know a million and one women across the world have this hairstyle, but I happen to love it. I had my hair cut like this back when I was 21 and it was so easy to maintain.

What do you think about these short hairstyles? Yay or nay?

Have You Told Yourself "I Love You" Lately?

When was the last time (if ever) you said, "I love you!" to yourself?

If you haven't done so, I want you to stand in front of a mirror right now and tell yourself, "I love you!"

It is only when you start having love for yourself that the beauty within will start to radiate. It is only when you start loving yourself that others will show respect and love for you!

Here are three ways you can show love for yourself:

    1. Go on a date with yourself once a week. I got this idea from the book, The Artist's Way, by Julia Cameron. She suggests that you go on a date with the museum or gallery. It's an awesome book to read even if you don't consider yourself to be an "artist" - although I do believe that we are all artists ;)

    2. Give yourself 10-15 minutes of alone time each day. Many of us women love to try and be Superwomen by doing everything and anything to please other people. However, we end up making ourselves crazy!

    3. Treat yourself to something nice.Once in awhile I think it's good to treat yourself to something real nice. Perhaps you could treat yourself to a massage and a pedicure...or maybe, if your budget allows, you could treat yourself to something really, really nice like that designer purse you've had your eye on for awhile.

I don't know about you, but I'm thinking about this Gucci "Joy" tote...

What do you do to show love for yourself?

White Sands designer gelTo keep those wandering strands of hair in place, I highly recommend White Sands Designer Gel. I absolutely love this hair gel. Another Wow: Chanel Couture Spring 2009

Chanel Couture Spring 2009For as long as I can remember I've had a "crush" on Chanel - the brand, that is. Everything about the brand embodies an aura of sophistication and timeless style. With Karl Lagerfeld as the current artistic genius behind Chanel, they've put out collections that continue to Wow even the most discerning fashion critic.

The Spring 2009 Couture collection definitely took my breath away...

There's something about a black and white collection that immediately grabs your attention. On top of that add the artistic flair of a beautifully decorated, almost sculpture-like backdrop, and you have the making of a phenomenal fashion show.

But what else would you expect from Karl Lagerfeld?

I put together a slideshow of the collection to see it in all its glory...

    I echo Sarah Mower's ( words:
"It was rather like an uplifting rite of spring, perfectly pitched between graphic modernism, ravishing romance, and astonishingly innovative detail."

    Beauty Product Review: L'Oreal Mascaras

A few years ago I was on the search for the perfect mascara and I think I've finally found it. Well, it's actually two mascaras and they happen to be made by the same company: L'Oreal.

I don't know about you, but as I mentioned before, the one makeup product I can't go without is mascara!

If you've been reading this blog for awhile, you know that I'm all for "au natural" beauty products. L'Oreal has come out with Bare Naturale which contains 86% natural-origin ingredients plus minerals that are both paraben- and fiber-free.

I like how it feels like I'm not even wearing mascara!

However, the mascara that I really love, love, love is the L'Oreal Double Extend Beauty Tubes Mascara. As I've mentioned before, my eyelashes are pretty non-existent, but I hate using fake eyelashes. There's just too much fuss associated with them and they do not look natural on me at all!

On one side of the Double Extend mascara is the base coat that gives your eyelashes that extension effect. The other side of the tube has the actual mascara.

For me, the results are amazing! They look thicker and much longer. I wish I had a better camera so you could see how my eyes really, really look ;)

If you're not familiar with the company, Om Aroma is a luxury organic spa and skincare line that fuses ultra-sensual ingredients like Caviar, Truffles and Champagne with organic ingredients for anti-aging results.

With ingredients like that, who wouldn't love this skincare line?

John Galliano Creates Another Wow: Spring 2009 Christian Dior Couture

If you had a fancy event to go to and money wasn't an issue, which designer would you buy a dress from?

After looking through the photos from the Spring 2009 Christian Dior Haute Couture Show in Paris, I think I'd go bold and daring and try one of these dresses...

I think the hat adds to the "Wow" factor for this ensemble...

Christian Dior Haute Couture Spring 2009

I love the colors in these dresses. The volume and draping is phenomenal.
"I feel like a princess!" would be an understatement.

Christian Dior Spring 2009Christian Dior S/S 2009Every season I'm amazed at John Galliano's creativity and imagination. He is a true artist on so many levels and it's always refreshing to see his work. He certainly knows how to create a sense of drama and fantasy through his creations.
