30-Something and Still Sexy

Maria PalmaRecently I turned the "Big 35", but I have to say that it really is no big deal for me. I used to consider being 35 or over to be "Over the Hill" - when lines and wrinkles start to appear and mommy jeans become an everyday uniform.

Well, fortunately I've come to a place in my life where I've accepted who I am. I'm not obsessed with recreating the body I had when I was 21. No "Perfect Girl" syndrome for me. I happen to think that I still have a bit of sass and sexiness ;) I've managed to stay at my ideal weight without ever dieting.

My Key to Staying Young...

My tip for staying young is to simply stay active....and laugh alot! Every week I walk an average of 4-5 miles. Instead of driving to the store, I walk. It's about a mile walk, but I view it as a time to clear my head and get some fresh air.

Staying active doesn't necessarily mean that you should do hard-core exercise every day. Exercise could be doing something fun and simple like dancing your ass off when nobody is watching - something I recommend doing every once in awhile!

Age Is a State of Mind

You've probably heard the old cliché time and again: "Age is just a number". Well, that's the mantra that I've been living by for the past five years.

Well, I really and do truly believe that age is just a state of mind. Sometimes I even forget how old I am!

If all you're focused on is getting old and feeling old, well, guess what? You're going to age faster than somebody who is focused on just living and enjoying life. So get out there and stay focused on being healthy and active!

Let me tell you, getting older doesn't mean you stop being sexy. Check out this feature from Total Beauty that offers tips to looking sexy over 40...

All-Natural Beauty Secrets

I'm on an all-natural beauty kick and I wanted to share this article I came across: 7 All-Natural Secrets for Skin Beauty. I never would've thought to use yogurt on my face!

And speaking of all-natural beauty...How do you know if a product that's labeled "natural" really is?

Well, Denise DeBaun, the CEO of Sustainable Youth Technologies, says this about many "natural" beauty products:

"Unfortunately, a lot of beauty products labeled “natural” simply don’t hold up under scrutiny. If you look closely at their labels, you’ll see a number of suspect ingredients used time and time again.

Most common are the parabens—methyl and butyl—which are used as preservatives, and which are not, by anyone’s standard, natural. You’ll also find sodium laureth/lauryl sulfate (SLES/SLS), a surfactant that can cause skin and eye irritations. Look further and you’ll find plenty of other ingredients in common use that may or may not be toxic, but which are certainly not natural.

So what can you do to cut through this confusion?

For one thing, really scrutinize the labels. Look beyond the active ingredients, and make sure all the secondary ingredients are natural as well. Especially the preservative system, which often times contains chemical ingredients that may overshadow the benefits of an organic or natural active ingredient."

Prada Sunglasses on My Mind

Prada SunglassesThe summer season is fast approaching and one must-have item that every Californian like me owns is a pair of sunglasses.

If you’ve been reading this blog for awhile, you probably know that I own quite a few pairs of sunglasses. I have a black pair of glasses for those days I’m feeling “cool and chic”. There’s the white pair of glasses for when I’m feeling a bit sassy. My brown-colored sunglasses are really dark and work for those really bright and sunny days. Then there is the copper-colored pair that has probably seen its last days.

So, now I’m on the hunt for a new pair of sunglasses…

I typically don’t spend a great deal of money on sunglasses because I have a history of losing or breaking them. However, this year I may just splurge. Every now and then I think it’s ok to splurge. You work hard for your money and you deserve nice things!

I came across these Prada sunglasses offered by SmartBuyGlasses that are fun and sassy (Pictured above). They have a honey-colored frame with light brown lenses. I picture myself wearing a cute white dress and these Prada sunglasses…enjoying a nice stroll in some far-off exotic place… Ahhh…

These glasses cost £178.95 which equals about $266 U.S. dollars. It comes in other colors, but I think the honey color is perfect for summer. I figure that I could probably keep these forever if I take good care of them. It’ll be one of those items I can pass down to my daughter when it becomes “vintage”.

    Earth-Friendly Beauty Products I Love

    Earth-Friendly Beauty Products

Today is Earth Day, a day of celebrations, a day to honor our Mother Earth, and a day to just be more conscious of the life and abundance that surrounds us.

I love that companies in the makeup and beauty industries have become more earth-friendly...and so today I pay homage to a few companies that have come out with products that are not only good for our bodies, but are good for the earth too!

    • L'Oreal Paris EverPure Moisture Shampoo & Conditioner - I've been using this shampoo and conditioner for the past couple months and my hair feels soft and manageable. I have thick, course hair that tends to frizz out, so this L'Oreal line works pretty good. Best of all, it's sulfate-free and 100% vegan.
    • Revolution Organics - This whole line of beauty products is USDA certified organic and their packaging is printed on fsc-certified paper using vegetable-based inks. I LOVE the All-Over Body Balm which has 22+ uses. I keep it in my purse at all times and let my friend use it because her hands get really dry from work (she's a nurse). It really is an awesome moisturizer and the lemon scent is heavenly ;)
    • Kiss My Face Potent & Pure Collection - This newest collection contains no parabens, phthalates, SLS, artificial colors, artificial fragrances, or animal ingredients. The packaging is 100% biodegradable and the company recently removed the brochures from the packaging to save paper. You can find information and tutorials on their website instead. I just received some of their products today (what a great Earth Day present!) and will be reviewing some of them soon!

    Esprit Making a Comeback

crushed patent leather toteHere's a flashback:Back in the 80's when I was in junior high, (Oh, gosh, am I that old?!?) I was in love with ESPRIT clothing. I had this green and white t-shirt dress that I wore all the time...and of course, let's not forget the old school Esprit tote that I lugged around everywhere.

Well, my taste in bags has changed. The Esprit bag pictured here would be more to my liking now ;)

I don't know about other countries, but the Esprit brand appears to be making a comeback in the U.S.!

If you're ever in the L.A. area, you may want to check out the new Santa Monica store that just opened earlier this month...

    Tip For Natural Beauty

Awhile back I asked my Twitter followers if they had any beauty tips to share. Ellen Weber offered a couple good tip for natural beauty:

    Natural Beauty Tips

I agree that keeping your brain young definitely helps keep you physically young and beautiful. Harvard Medical School offers 12 ways to keep your brain young.

I like the idea of getting more physical exercise. I don't really believe in diets. Instead, I stay active and exercise on a regular basis. Even a walk around the block is better than nothing!

I used to think that cardio workouts or running three times a week was ok for me, but I discovered that I really didn't enjoy myself. Nowadays I do yoga and go for long walks. This is enough to keep me energized and fit. One DVD that I've been using is Yoga Zone - Yoga for Abs.

The important thing is to just be active and get your blood flowing! People who are active and energized are happier...and when you're happy, you're less stressed...and when you're less stressed, that natural, inner beauty comes out!

Beauty On a Budget: Beautiful Nails Without the Salon Price

    Beauty on a Budget

Who says that being beautiful has to cost a fortune? I'm someone who believes that you can be beautiful without having to visit a fancy salon. Back in my 20's I used to get my nails done every other week and my hair was high maintenance as well. The days of high-maintenance beauty are over!

A couple years ago I showed you my $2 manicure that took 10 minutes to do.

Well, recently I got Lippmann Collection's "Start Me Up" nail treatment set and this is what my nails looked like after I followed the directions that was included with the set...

    At-Home Manicure

Lippman Collection's "Start Me Up" Nail TreatmentStep-by-Step Directions:
    • Step 1: Smooth nail tip
    • Step 2: Gently buff ridges on top of nail plate.
    • Step 3: Smooth top of nail plate.
    • Step 4: Buff for super high gloss if you will NOT be applying lacquer.
    • Step 5: Brush cuticle remover on the cuticle and gently push back with a cuticle pusher.
    • Step 6: Dot a small amount of cuticle oil on the cuticle and massage.
    • Step 7: Brush nail primer on nail to instantly remove excess oil.
    • Step 8: Apply 1 coat of the Rehydrating Base Coat
    • Step 9: Apply Baby Love, baby-doll pink nail lacquer. Wait two minutes and apply second coat.
    • Step 10: Seal and shine with On a Clear Day top coat.
    Voila! Beautiful nails at home!

You can get the Start Me Up Lippmann Collection at Amazon.com for $39 and it'll probably last you at least 6 months or so depending on how often you do your nails.
