The Ideal Man or Woman: Is There Such a Thing As "Perfect"?

What is the ideal man or woman? What is considered "perfect"? These are questions I have asked myself in the past. I know that many of you try to change yourselves to fit this ideal. We want to be what everyone thinks is beautiful, sexy, or appealing.

Paige Roberts contacted me about a video she created that addresses this topic. Watch the video below...(Email subscribers click here to watch)

To expand on what Paige says at the end of the video...In terms of beauty, there is no such thing as "perfect" beauty. I often hear women say about stars and celebrities, "Wow, her skin is so perfect!" or "She has the perfect body!" This idea of being perfect is what makes people feel so insecure about themselves.

It can be a challenge to get out of this mindset of wanting to be perfect when we have so many advertisements, TV shows, movies, and magazines trying to tell us what is beautiful and what is not. These things do play on our minds, whether consciously or subconsciously.

The more time you spend getting to know yourself and accepting yourself for who you are, it gets easier to tune out all the media. You'll begin to realize that everyone is unique and we each have characteristics that make us beautiful.

Meetup With Nine West's Creative Director and Gossip Girl Stylist

It's only once in a blue moon that I get out to a fashion event in San Diego, but recently it seemed like a non-stop fashion fiesta for me...

First stop: Horton Plaza Nine West Event

When I walked up the stairs to the Nine West store, there was a long line waiting outside to meet Fred Allard, the creative director for Nine West. I was very excited about this event because I finally got to meet fellow fashion/beauty/style blogger, Sarah Conley of StyleIt. Sarah is also on the PR team for Nine West (Thanks for the invite, Sarah!), so she traveled from New York City to represent...

I also got to see Crosby Norris of PR Couture whom I haven't seen in years - even though we're both fashion bloggers who live in San Diego! Here's Crosby modeling a pair of very cute gold sandals which she bought that night...

I have these preconceived ideas about French men who work in the fashion industry, but Fred Allard really changed all those stereotypes. He's such a down-to-earth guy who is so passionate about his work.  Watch the video below where Fred talks about what inspires him and the future of Nine West...

Next Stop:  Nordstrom Fashion Valley

The next day I ventured out to Nordstrom Fashion Valley (My favorite department store and former employer!) to view the exclusive collection for Nordstrom. Fred and Gossip Girl stylist, Eric Daman, talked about the different spring styles - which is something I should have paid more attention to, but I think I had ADHD that day. There were just too many pretty shoes to look at!

NineWest/Elle Event at Nordstrom, Fashion Valley

Eric Daman did take a few minutes to tell me about his creative process, shares some thoughts about how he started in fashion, plus he gives us his tips for spring 2010 fashion...

Here I am with Fred Allard and Eric Daman...

Don't fret if you missed the Nine West events... Now you can join in the festivities because I have a special giveaway for you, dear reader!

One person will win the following:

Spending Time With Nature = Beauty and Good Health

Big Bear Lake

Although it is nice to go to a spa and get a massage to feel revitalized and relax tense muscles, for me nothing beats a nice weekend getaway where you can spend time with nature and just be in the moment.

I believe that connecting with nature is one of the keys to good health and happiness. With Earth Day approaching, I highly recommend taking even just a couple hours this week to sit outside and appreciate all the beautiful nature around you.

This past weekend I drove up to Big Bear Lake which is located here in Southern California. Big Bear is known for its ski summit and many people from San Diego or Los Angeles like to go there for a quick getaway because it's only a few hours away.

We hung out right on the lake for most of our stay and just soaked up all the nice, fresh air and beautiful surroundings. It made me think how much more relaxed and beautiful we could all be if we just stopped to enjoy nature once in awhile. Everyone we met who lives there was so nice. You can't help but be that way when you have so much beautiful nature around you!

Wouldn't it be nice if you could have a professional hair styling team and high fashion brand come to a city near you and help you create a new look for spring? Well, that's what the John Frieda team and BCBG are doing for the next two months...

The two companies have teamed up and are traveling to select cities in a mobile salon. This mobile salon is actually an 18-wheeler that has been gutted and the walls flattened out to reveal a true salon complete with styling stations, a receptionist, and even a waiting area. Love it!

The John Frieda expert team led by celebrity hair stylist Harry Josh will be providing complimentary 15-minute consultations and styling lessons to address every hair issue. These consultations are on a first come, first serve basis. You'll walk away with a "hair prescription" from your stylist.

And after your hair session, you'll be able to shop at the BCBG mini boutique. Check out the BCBG kiosks and order style essentials for the season online with an exclusive John Frieda discount.

The John Frieda Style On Site Tour will begin in New York City on Tuesday, April 27-Thursday, April 29 at Times Square (Broadway between 42nd & 43rd).

Review: Transcend Day Spa Microdermabrasion Treatment

In the Waiting Room at the SpaEvery year around this time women all around the U.S. and Canada celebrate Spa Week, a time when participating spas offer select treatments for only $50! This year I was one of those lucky bloggers who was invited by Michelle Joni Lapidos, the editor of Spa Week Daily, to do a review of one of the spas here in San Diego. When I found out I was going to review a spa that offers treatments using organic products, I was even more excited.

As I walked through the door and stepped into Transcend Day Spa, I immediately felt a wave a relaxation take over. A warm, pleasant scent and delectable snacks greeted me in the waiting room...

Here is a short video that will give you an idea of the ambience of the spa, plus you'll get a glimpse of Meghan working her magic on my face...

This was my first experience getting a microdermabrasion in a spa, so I didn't really know what to expect. When Meghan did the extractions to get rid of blockages in my pores, I felt a little pain, but all was well when Meghan gave me a massage on my arms, upper chest, and scalp. I did love the berry-smelling cleansers and massage oils that she used. Needless to say, I walked out of the spa floating on cloud nine...and feeling "organically beautiful"!

If you live in North County San Diego in the Carlsbad/Vista area or if you're ever in San Diego on vacation, I highly recommend a visit to Transcend Day Spa. This spa is actually extending the $50 Spa Week special until the end of the month, so you can still get in and experience luxury pampering for less! Check out their spa packages.

You may also want to check out Transcend Spa's Health and Wellness Beauty Program. Enjoy a 60 minute Massage, a 60 Minute Facial, or a 50 minute Body Treatment for $59. Just come in once a month for any ONE of these treatments and you will always pay $59. You can also get the microdermabrasion with facial for $85 under the program.

What To Do With Old, Worn Out Tank Tops

Old Tank Tops Turn Dusters

Every six months I go through my closet to reorganize everything and get rid of clothes I haven't worn in awhile. Most of the time I give away clothes to the Salvation Army or Goodwill, however, there are some clothes that I wouldn't want other people wearing - like my deodorant-stained tank tops.

I was going to throw these tank tops away, but I started thinking about all the millions and millions of clothing pieces already filling up our landfills. I've been to a landfill before and it's not a pretty sight!

Even though these cotton tank tops are probably biodegradable, I think they can have a second life by becoming furniture dusters ;)

Another thing you could do with old clothes is give it to a mixed media artist. Artists know how to use their creativity to re-purpose anything. For instance, I've used old scraps of fabric in my oil paintings to create this mixed media collage painting...

Do you have any ideas to add?

Here are a couple eye-opening articles about disposable fashion...

It's Earth Month at Beauty Is Within

Celebrate Earth Month at Beauty Is Within! We celebrate Earth Day on April 22 this year, but here at Beauty Is Within, it's going to be a whole month of celebration...

During Earth Month I'll be sharing beauty and fashion tips, resources, and products that will encourage you to be Earth friendly.

I consider myself to be very eco conscious, and I think the Earth would be a much happier place if more of us were aware of what we consume and what we throw away.

To kick off Earth Month, I'd like to share a couple events/initiatives that you may want to join or be a part of. Every little bit of help counts!

  • Origins will be hosting its first annual Origins Rocks Earth Month Concert in NYC on April 19th. Fans are invited to the FREE star-studded concert at Webster Hall New York City located in Downtown Manhattan featuring Grammy Award-Winner Macy Gray. Origins has chosen to partner with Macy as her new single “Beauty In The World” captures the sentiment of Earth Month. The concert will also include performances by emerging artists Ryan Star and Jon McLaughlin and will be hosted by a special celebrity guest emcee.

One free concert ticket will be offered to those who bring at least one empty cosmetic package, regardless of brand, to Origins retail stores in NYC, Westchester and the Garden State Plaza Mall (no purchase necessary, while tickets last.) Ticket holders must arrive at Webster Hall New York City for first come first serve entry. Origins will collect all the packaging and recycle or responsibly convert it to energy through its Return to Origins Recycling Program.

  • The San Diego Aveda Earth Day Beach Cleanup will come together with The Surfrider Foundation as part of a global initiative that acknowledges the daily struggle of over one billion people around the world who do not have access to clean water- that’s 1 in 7 people. This year’s beach cleanup will unite San Diego residents and local Aveda Salons at Belmont Park in Mission Beach on April 18, 2010 from 10am - 12pm. All proceeds to benefit The Surfrider Foundation. Find out more by visiting: http://aveda.yourcause.com/PortalHome.aspx

For more Earth Day events, visit the Earth Day Network website: http://earthday.org/events. I will be adding more events here as I find out about them.

Getting Back Into An Exercise Routine

Jogging by Eleanza on FlickrWhen it comes to natural beauty, nothing can replace good ole fashioned exercise! With the weather warming up, there's no excuse not to get out, get some fresh air, and re-energize yourself by walking, jogging, or doing any type of exercise that gets the blood flowing. Take a dancing class if that excites you!

If you're wondering how some people can look so much younger than their age, it's most likely due to regular exercise, healthy eating, and lots of laughter...which reminds me, refer to an old post I wrote, "5 Anti-Aging Tips For Natural Beauties."

I'll admit that I haven't actually followed my own advice. I've been really slacking in the exercise department. I can tell that it's affected my energy, quality of sleep, and productivity levels. When I exercise I sleep so good and I feel much more energetic.

The fact is, I haven't given my health priority lately. I know that many of you are probably in the same boat. Just like I give priority to my blogging, I must also put that same energy and focus into getting fit.

What do you do to stick with an exercise routine?

Maybe SELF Magazine's "Workout in the Park" will inspire me to stay consistent with a workout routine. The event will take place here in San Diego on Saturday, April 24 at Mission Bay Park from 11am - 3pm. Celebrity Yoga instructor, Mandy Ingber, will be there to lead a yoga class and there will be other workouts you can take part in. Looks like it will be a fun event! I Failed the 30 Day Hairstyle Challenge

Ok, so much for the 30 day hairstyle challenge that I started for myself. I reverted back to my old way of just waking up and throwing the hair in a ponytail!

Even on my birthday my hair was haphazardly put together. I wanted to share a picture of what my hair looked like on my birthday, but it's way too embarrassing ;)

It's not that I don't have the time to do my hair. Am I lazy? Yes, I will admit it. But I am determined to work on being more creative with my hair. So, I figure the more I talk and write about it, the more I will focus on it!

I like bobby pins, so I'm going to try out these three cute hairstyles using bobby pins...

Oh, and speaking of hairstyles, as I've said before, it's important to use quality hairstyling tools. You don't want your hair falling out!  If you need a new hairbrush, you might want to check out BrushLove.com's range of hair brushes plus other beauty tools. Right now they're offering a 25% discount and a free tote bag to Beauty Is Within readers. Enter promo code: "BB30" to take advantage of this special. Offer expires: 4/21/10. Review: Philip B. Rejuvenating Oil

Philip B Rejuvenating Oil
Goodbye, dry itchy scalp! Those of you who have been reading this blog for awhile know that I have an issue with a very dry scalp. I've tried all kinds of remedies, and although Paul Mitchell's tea tree shampoo worked at first, I still have problems.

I think part of the issue with this itchy scalp was due to using cheap shampoos and conditioners in the past. As part of my focus on using more natural products for my hair, I started using Philip B's Rejuvenating Oil on my scalp and hair this past month.  So far it's been working for me!

You can use Philip B's oil on both your scalp and your hair, but I've been using it mainly on my scalp. However, if I use it on my hair, I just have to shampoo my hair and I don't really need conditioner.  You simply apply it directly to your scalp.

What I really like about this rejuvenating oil is the smell. Mmmmm! It has a sweet smell of Ylang Ylang and Gardenia. Other yummy ingredients include olive, almond, walnut, peanut, sesame and jojoba oils.

Philip B's Rejuvenating Oil is highly recommended for those of you who style your hair everyday with flat irons and blow dryers...or if you have a super dry scalp like me!

Click here to shop for Philip B products at Amazon.com

If you do have the patience and prefer an all-natural remedy for itchy, dry scalp, you may want to check out the video below that shows you how to create your own remedy from scratch...
