How to Stay Motivated and Inspired to Exercise

Walking along the trailFinding the motivation to exercise on a regular basis can be a challenge. As I said in my previous post about exercise, blogging about it helps keep it at the forefront of my mind. It also helps that I have a very active fiance who also inspires me to exercise.

My favorite form of exercise is to go walking. It doesn't put any strain on my body and I can simply enjoy the sights along the way. There's a trail not too far from my house that goes around this huge park and golf course. I always enjoy looking at the ducks and birds hanging out by the lake.

I've tried walking on the treadmill at the gym, but it's not nearly as enjoyable. I look forward to being outdoors because I'm usually inside most of the day working.

People are motivated by different things and have different reasons for exercising, but I do know that getting exercise on a regular basis is not only healthy, but you are a much happier person as well.

What Inspires You to Exercise?

I was reading an article the other day about Kelly Osbourne and how she stays motivated when exercising. She says that she wears makeup because she doesn't like to look in the mirror while she's working out and seeing her nasty, sweaty face.

I say, whatever you need to do to inspire you to keep exercising!

Here are a couple things that I like to do to keep myself inspired:

Vision Book
My Vision Book
1. Listen to dance tunes - I created a playlist of dance tunes on my phone to listen to while I walk.  I recommend SexyBack by Justin Timberlake!

2. I wear cute workout clothes. If I go out and buy workout clothes, I'm going to feel compelled to wear them. I look good which makes me feel good while I'm exercising.

3. Create a vision board. Awhile back I put together a collage of images that reflected good health and exercise. Having a visual image that I can see on a regular basis keeps me inspired.

What do you do to stay motivated or be inspired to exercise?

Beauty Tips: Get a Radiant Holiday Look from Hourglass Artistic Director Gina Brooke

"The concept of creating beauty is inseparable from that of creating art. It is from artistic conviction that beauty emerges."
-Gina Brooke

Earlier this year when I reviewed the Intraceuticals Infusions facial treatment, I had the pleasure of meeting makeup artist Gina Brooke, who has worked with beauties such as Madonna, Anne Hathaway, Naomi Campbell and Gwen Stefani.

Gina is so nice with such a outgoing personality. You can tell that she's very passionate about what she does. It's no wonder she's attracted such wonderful opportunities in her life!

Gina believes in fresh, beautiful makeup all year round and radiant looking skin without too much sparkle. She shares her beauty tips for the holiday season:

CHEEKS:
"When it comes to chic cheeks, I have a three-dimensional approach that anyone can replicate at home. Firstly, I “warm” the skin by applying bronzer to the high points of the face. Secondly, I add “light” to the complexion by using a highlighter on the apples of the cheeks, down the bridge of the nose and the jaw bone. Lastly, I “color” with blush applied strategically to the apples of the cheeks—smile when you’re doing so for the ideal application. The result is a flawless looking complexion."
Recommended products: Illume Crème-to-Go Powder in Sunset and Bronze Light, Brush #2

EYES:
"Hold the neutrals. Why not try dramatic eyes for an evening event? Nothing says nighttime glamour like a metallic smoky eye. Choose a shadow duo with a black and a metal shade like gunmetal gray, silver or bronze. Using a shadow brush, apply the lighter shade first. Use your finger to blend for a graduation of color. Then apply the dark shade, but avoid applying the black shadow all the way across to the inner corner of the eyes—it makes your eyes seem bigger that way. Blend the two colors together."
Recommended products: Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo in Prism, Brush #3 and #4

"Gold is an undeniably festive color and the perfect choice to celebrate the season. An easy combination is to pair a gold shimmering eye shadow with a bright coral lip gloss—it’s a sultry look that flatters all skin tones. You could also heighten the impact of the gold shadow by wetting your brush before application. This technique is called “foiling” and it creates a gilded effect on the eyes. Make sure the shadow dries before moving on to another shade."
Recommended products: Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo in Dune, Brush #3, Femme Rouge Velvet Crème Lipstick in Muse

LIPS:
"I love bold, red lips, and if you haven’t experimented with their power, now is the time to do so. Red instantly transforms the face for an immediately polished look. Start with a neutral liner first. Don’t just fill in the lines. Use the liner over the entire lips to create a base for your lipstick. Using a lip brush, apply the lipstick from the outer corner to the inner corner, and repeat from the other side. Pair your rouge lips with smoky eyes for a gorgeous classic look."
Recommended products: Femme Rouge Velvet Crème Lipstick in Icon or Raven, Trace Lip Liner in Bare

FOUNDATION:
"To ensure your makeup lasts all night, always remember to prep skin with a primer first. It will ensure a flawless and long-lasting makeup application, and will also lock in moisture, which is ideal for cold weather. In addition, using a primer will help the foundation glide on smoothly and blend easily. Look for a luxurious foundation with anti-aging and light-diffusing ingredients."
Recommended products: Veil Mineral Primer, Illusion Tinted Moisturizer

The Finishing Touch – Bridal Jewelry

Are you making plans for a spring wedding? Today we have a guest post that will give you ideas if you're shopping for bridal jewelry...Enjoy!

Bridal Jewelry

Each couple’s wedding is unique, because it reflects the love and commitment that only you share. The saying that every bride is beautiful is true! As you walk down the aisle to join your fiancé, the intensity of the moment is reflected in your face and eyes. Your wedding gown and accessories have been carefully chosen; and you shine in the limelight at this special time.

Bridal jewelry is an important component of a bride’s appearance. When selecting your bridal jewelry, you should consider these things:

* Does it enhance your features, including hair and eye color, skin tone and body shape?

* Does the jewelry color match the gown? If the gown is white, cream or champagne; pearls, crystals and metals can be selected to showcase the gown color and enhance the details.

* Is the length of the necklace appropriate for the neckline, bust and waistline of the gown? A choker length pearl and crystal necklace with sterling silver or 14K gold fill will go with most necklines, and enhance the gown without detracting from it.

A bridal necklace should not cover any part of the wedding gown. Your neck and bust will determine if the necklace should be dainty or can have more body. Believe it or not, the eye will travel from your necklace and earrings to the waistline. A drop waist can be reflected in a necklace with a pendant. A princess waist should have a choker length strand. A-lines, sheaths and mermaid styles can carry a choker style or pendant, depending on the neckline of the wedding gown.

Earrings can be made of pearls or crystals and worn alone or with a necklace. Crystals will reflect light on to your face.

Pearls will bring out your natural skin tone...

Pink pearl earrings

Does the bracelet go with the arm length of the gown? Pearls, crystals or a combination, used in one strand or multiple bracelet strands are very lovely with almost any sleeve length, except for elbow length. Don’t forget the color, style and length of your veil when selecting the color and style of your earrings, necklace and bracelet.

Crystal Bracelet

Multi-stranded Bracelet

Pearls and crystals are traditional for several reasons. One reason is that they go well with most wedding gowns. White, champagne, cream or pale pink natural freshwater pearls are good color choices. Clear, sparkling crystals are appropriate by themselves or paired with pearls for a natural, yet dressy look. Bright sterling silver and yellow gold metals should be used, but with discretion.

Bridesmaid Jewelry

As the bride, you have carefully chosen your wedding party, selecting bridesmaids who are near and dear to you. You plan for their gowns, as well. Consider selecting the bridesmaids’ jewelry to go with their gowns. Adding color to bridesmaid jewelry is certainly appropriate. You may match crystal colors to their gowns. For your bridesmaids’ jewelry, determine if sterling silver or gold goes best with your theme. Or select a silver or gold, and clear crystal bracelet or necklace that they can wear with anything, even after your wedding. Presenting wedding jewelry to your bridesmaids as a gift is a lovely way to show your appreciation; and it is a gift they will each enjoy.

For Jewish weddings, you can add a sterling silver Star of David charm on your bridesmaids bracelet, or as a clasp dangle on their necklace, for extra meaning.

As a result of your thoughtful planning, your wedding will be a beautiful reflection of your love, your excitement and of this special moment in time. And you, the bride, will be stunning! I guarantee it!

Tell Yourself You're Beautiful, One Message At a Time

As much as I talk about how important it is to embrace your own beauty and it is inner beauty that matters the most, I must admit that I'm not immune to the critic inside my mind who scrutinizes over every bump, scar, or perceived "flaw" on my face or body. And the more time I spend in the mirror looking at myself, the louder the voice gets...

Oh, look at that acne scar!

Oh, you're getting wrinkles on your forehead!

I've reached a point now where I'm able to stop the inner critic before it spirals out of control. I've become more aware of those thoughts and I'm able to just stop, take a deep breath, and start focusing on the positive. But I still do have those negative thoughts from time to time.

It is easier said than done, though. When you've had those negative thoughts playing like a broken record in your mind for years and years, it's going to take a little time to change.

Today I came across this video on YouTube that will help you get back on track on those days when you're not feeling so beautiful. Isabel Rasmussen of Beauty Message offers these tips:

So are you ready to challenge yourself to think positively beautiful thoughts about yourself?

Makeup Review and Giveaway: Sante Eyeshadow Trios

Rose Eyeshadow TrioEyeshadow is a makeup product that I never really got into until recently. You would think an artist like myself would love to play with different colors of eyeshadow and create different looks...but not so much. I tend to stick to the same colors: brown and brown. Oh, sometimes I'll be "daring" and wear purple because that's my favorite color.

However, recently I received samples of Sante's eyeshadow trios to review. It's really inspired me to have more fun with my eye makeup. I'm having fun experimenting with smokey eyes for the fall season.

Sante is a company that has been around since the late 70's. It's a top-selling European brand that offers 100% natural beauty products. They use botanical ingredients and are formulated for those with sensitive or allergy-prone skin.

Sante's eyeshadow trios ($16) come in very natural colors, which are appealing to me. They're made with organic olive oils and pure mineral pigments.  My face tends to get oily, but this eyeshadow holds up pretty well.

Below is a picture of me wearing the Aubergine trio. I applied the lighter shade just below my eyebrows, the plum color all over, and then the brown into the crease of the eye lids...

Here are other color palettes that are available...

Inspiring Fashion Window Displays

When I worked for Wet Seal, one of my favorite things to do was put together the window displays.  I also loved visual merchandising and creating pretty displays that inspired people to shop, shop, shop!

I've been meaning to post these pretty window displays from my trip to San Francisco last month.  I like the minimalist feel of this BCBG Max Azria window at San Francisco Centre...

I also liked this colorful and fun Halloween-inspired window at Kate Spade...

I'm really looking forward to the holiday displays. I'm reminded of the "Will & Grace" episode when Jack was given the challenge to decorate the Christmas window display at Barney's. Oh, joy!

Have you seen any inspiring fashion window displays lately? Take a picture and upload it to our Facebook page!

10 Foods to Eat to Stay Healthy

Free woman holding fresh blueberries healthy living stock photo Creative CommonsFor the past couple months I've been more conscious about what I eat. What you eat has a huge impact on how you feel and what you look like. Today I have a guest blog post that will hopefully inspire you to eat healthy too! Enjoy...

There are some foods that we eat when we want to be comforted. There are some foods that we eat when we need more energy. And then there are some foods that we don’t always eat – but we should because they keep us healthy and being healthy is one of the most important things in life.

Here are ten foods that you should eat to stay healthy:

1.  Blueberries. The number one thing that you can do to stay healthy is to boost your immune system. Foods that are rich in antioxidants provide an immediate boost to your immune system. One of the most antioxidant rich foods that you’ll find is the blueberry. Wild blueberries are the best choice but any blueberries are better than none. Blueberries have other health benefits that include helping with weight loss, improving vision and promoting the health of the urinary tract.

2.  Cheese. Many people think poorly of cheese but it has a surprising number of health benefits. Some types of cheese are capable of boosting the immune system. Other health benefits of cheese include keeping your teeth and bones healthy and even potentially preventing cancer.

3.  Avocados. These yummy fruits are rich in Vitamin E, a fat-soluble vitamin with antioxidant properties. Avocados may prevent certain types of cancer, improve eyesight, lower cholesterol levels and prevent strokes.

4.  Ginger. One of the best foods that you can use in small doses is ginger. It’s good for everything from relieving nausea to improving circulation. It’s used in the treatment of colds so eat some when you’re first starting to feel unwell and make yourself stay healthy.

5.  Broccoli. You’ve heard all your life that broccoli is good for you. The truth is that it really is. It is rich in Vitamin C, which is something that the body needs in order to stay healthy. It is also rich in fiber, potassium and folic acid. All of these things lead to numerous health benefits that can keep you feeling well for years to come.

6.  Lentils. Another good source of folic acid is lentils. Folic acid helps with the formation of red blood cells. But that’s not the only good thing about lentils. Lentils are rich in fiber, protein and numerous trace minerals that you need to stay healthy. For example, lentils contain iron, which further improves the health of red blood cells.

7.  Milk. Drink your milk if you want to stay healthy. It provides you with much-needed protein and calcium. It has riboflavin in it, which will keep your eyes working well. And it has Vitamin A, which helps fight off allergies. You can get it fortified with Vitamin D, a vitamin that many people are lacking these days. Note that you should drink low fat or skim milk instead of whole milk to avoid health drawbacks associated with fattier milk.

8.  Shellfish. Unless you have a shellfish allergy you should be including foods like clams and mussels in your diet. That’s because they provide you with minerals and vitamins that are hard to get from other meats, fruits and vegetables. If you want to stay healthy then you need to get all of the nutrients that your body requires, not just some of them. Shellfish provides iron, magnesium and potassium.

9.  Spinach. Popeye isn’t the only one that should be eating his spinach. We all need this leafy green vegetable to stay healthy. It is rich in nutrients and vitamins. It is also rich in flavonoids, which act as antioxidants. This means that spinach strengthens your immune system. With a great immune system, you’re a healthier person from day to day.

10. Peanuts. Add peanuts to your diet to reduce your risk of heart disease, a leading problem that affects people’s health as they age. Peanuts are rich in Vitamin E, calcium, niacin, fiber and protein. With all of those healthy things in them, peanuts are a must-have item for the person who wants to be healthy.

3 Fall Accessories I Can't Do Without

As I've often talked about on this blog, accessories can make or break an outfit. Accessories can even turn a pair of jeans and a t-shirt into a very stylish outfit.  I never leave the house without accessorizing in some way.  For the fall season, there are certain accessories that I cannot do without:

The Hat

Actually, it doesn't matter what season it is, a hat is always a stylish element. (Refer to one of my recent posts, I Totally Wear Hats, and You Can Too.)

Hats by Juicy Couture Kids at ShopStyle
My favorite hat to wear during the fall season is a plain, grey wool beret that I bought many years ago. However, I've been thinking about getting an animal-print beret like the one pictured here.  Animal print never seems to go out of style - and neither do berets!

I would wear this beret with something simple like a little black dress and tall black boots.

The Belt

A good belt can emphasize your shape and create contour in any outfit. I like this wide, stretch belt from Express ($39.90)...
The Scarf

I'm a little bummed that it's still too early to wear scarves in Southern California because I just received the softest black and white Cashmink houndstooth scarf from FRAAS similar to the one pictured here. Cashmink is actually 20% finer than cashmere and costs much less (~$30-$40).

As soon as the weather starts getting cooler, I'll take a picture of me sporting the scarf and post it to the Facebook page.  It goes great with my Puma houndstooth hat!

Finding Inspiration to Exercise

Do Yoga in New Colours

Exercising consistently is something that I’ve been struggling with these past few months. For whatever reason, I’ve lost the motivation to work out and stay in shape. My problem is that I get bored easily. My friend likes to go walking in the morning, and although I have joined her a few times, I don’t find it that enjoyable.

As I was looking at pictures of me that were taken on Halloween, I became very critical of certain body parts that were looking a bit flabby. I’ve also noticed that I don’t have the same level of energy as I used to. I knew then that I needed to get back to a regular exercise routine.

One form of exercise that I do like is yoga, so I’m looking to buy a few yoga DVD’s so I can do exercise at home. Yoga offers many health benefits, and I especially like that it's not that strenuous on the body.  I also like that it keeps me centered and grounded.

YouTube has an abundance of videos on yoga. Here's a yoga video I found for beginners...

Yoga socks by KushyFoot
Since I'm going to start doing yoga again, I'm going to try out these yoga socks that I got from KushyFoot. They have the anti-skid soles, so when I'm in that warrior yoga position, I don't fall over!

As I'm writing this, I'm starting to feel very inspired to get back into a regular exercise routine. Perhaps if I blog more about exercise, it will keep me motivated. So stay tuned for fitness updates and tips!
