Natural Beauty: Why Use Mineral Makeup?

Thank Goodness for the mineral makeup revolution! I have to say that prior to mineral makeup foundation, it was torturous having to wear liquid foundation. Don’t get me wrong, if regular foundation works for you, I’m happy for you. I, for one, found it such a hassle trying to get liquid foundation to blend in with my skin. My face always looked ghost-like in pictures! Well, now there are companies that let you create the perfect blend for your skin, but I just find it easier to use mineral makeup.

Finding the Right Pair of Jeans

For women it can be frustrating when shopping for denim jeans. I once spent a few hours in a shop trying on at least 7 pairs of jeans before finding a pair that fit just right. I’m sure many of you have even shopped all day in search of the perfect pair of jeans. It fits just right on the waist, but too long at the bottom or it’s the perfect length, but too tight around the junk in the trunk.

Arm Candy for the Arm Party

There’s a new term floating around in fashion blogger circles...“arm party”...and you’re invited :) No really, you are! Kristina of Pretty Shiny Sparkly has posted a new challenge for Bloggers Do It Better members inviting them to throw their own arm party.

I love bracelets, but have never worn more than 2 or 3 at a time, and I don’t wear them on both arms. I used to watch Rachel Zoe’s show and see her arm parties wishing I could pull off that look. I’m sure I could, but it’s a little out of my comfort zone. In my corner of the world I’ve only seen teenagers and young girls wearing tons of bracelets on their arms. However, after seeing Kristina’s and The Man Repeller’s arm party, I thought, What the heck? It’s time to get my party on!

Semi-Rant About Beauty Pageants

I don't believe in beauty competitions where we compare women or little girls and decide who is the "prettiest" or "the best". Women (or men) who enter these pageants and lose walk away thinking they are not good enough. They lose some of their self-esteem.  Whether you want to believe it or not, these types of competitions do affect people psychologically, even if it's just for fun.

My Top 3 Ways to Save Money on Beauty Treatments

Although it is nice to be able to visit the salon or spa every week to get pampered, sometimes it’s just not feasible if you’re on a budget. I’m one of those women who actually prefers to give myself facials, manicures, and pedicures rather than going to the salon. I don’t know exactly how much money I’ve saved pampering at home, but I’m sure it’s over $100 a month, which is $1,200+ a year! There are many ways to save money on your beauty regimen, so I thought I’d share my top 3 ways to save money on beauty treatments:

The Great Sunscreen Debate

Photo from my vacation in Miami
After writing my last post about taking care of your skin, I started thinking about the big sunscreen debate and whether or not sunscreen is good for you.

Although it’s been said that sunscreen does protect your skin from harmful UV rays, there are others who say that sunscreen contributes to skin cancer because it blocks the creation of Vitamin D, which the body actually needs. Various studies have shown that Vitamin D is an important factor in cancer prevention.

Review: Made From Earth Beauty Products

Have you told your skin lately how much you love it? Unfortunately, so many of us forget to do this.  We abuse our skin by using product after product that contain toxins instead of showing love by using beauty products that truly nourish the skin.

Thankfully there are more beauty companies nowadays that offer organic, holistic products that don't contain parabens, sulfates, and all the gunk that can wreak havoc on your skin and immune system. And they wonder why skin cancer is the most common form of cancer?

DIY Fashion: Design Your Own T-Shirt

Inspire kids to design their own t-shirts!
I made the mistake of going into Michael’s craft store the other day. Well, it’s not really a mistake when there’s an actual reason you have to go. However, when you go in for one thing and come out with other things you didn’t intend on buying (you know, like those trips to Walmart or Target), it’s a mistake. However, it’s hard to turn down a good deal. Case in point: T-shirts on sale 2 for $5.

Your Watch Talks About You

Modeling my fiance's watches...
I believe that every piece of clothing and accessory we wear expresses our unique sense of style. Everything from your handbag to socks, even hair barrettes and watches - they reflect who you are. Practical? Fun? Adventurous? Serious? There is one item in your wardrobe that is most fascinating to me, however: the watch. Not that I would actually judge you for the watch you wear, but it does speak volumes about the type of person you are.

Photoshopped Celebrities: Stop the Madness

You know how authorities in the U.S. have been cracking down on the importation of counterfeit handbags and clothing? It should be the same for cosmetic companies that plaster airbrushed celebrities across fashion and beauty magazines. Recently L'Oreal wanted to run an ad with Julia Roberts that was obviously airbrushed to the tenth power.

Shoes Are Like Love...

My first shoe love: sneakers. If I remember correctly, throughout grade school and junior high I practically lived in sneakers. How could you go wrong with a pair of comfortable shoes that you can run, skip, climb trees with, or do whatever your heart desires? I wasn’t a girly-girl that begged her mom for heels. Give me a pair of sneakers and I’m good to go!

Attending Cosmoprof 2011 in Las Vegas?

Heading out to Las Vegas next week for Cosmoprof?  Let's meet!

Cosmoprof is a trade show for the cosmetic and beauty industries where professionals can network and learn about all the latest in beauty products, services, and trends.  Every year it's held in Las Vegas, but there are also Cosmoprof shows in Bologna, Istanbul, and Hong Kong.  This year's convention in Vegas will be held from July 31st - August 2nd at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center.

This will be my first year attending, but I won't be there until Tuesday, which is the last day of the show.  If you represent a beauty brand and will be in Vegas next week, I'd love to meet with you!

Look Good in Shorts and Bikinis: 3 Thigh Exercises You Can Do At Home

SSC Yoga with Eoin FinnI have to admit that I have slight complex about my thighs. In college I wanted bigger thighs, and now that I do have bigger thighs, I want them to be muscular. Don’t get me wrong, I do love and accept what my body looks like. This just gives me something to work towards, besides being healthy. So this next month I will be concentrating on thigh exercises for leg strength.

Many women retain fat in their thighs and I often hear my friends complaining about “cottage cheese thighs”. If this sounds like you, here are a few of my favorite exercises that you can do at home to give your thighs a good workout:

The Beloved Maxi Skirt

Dear Black Maxi Skirt,

I bought you in the summer of '99 knowing that you were going to be a classic. I could dress you up or down, wear you to work, and wear you on the weekends. Regardless of what season it was, I could find some way to create an outfit to include you.

Can a 30-Something Pull Off the Neon Trend?

It was a bright spring morning, and my mom watched me at the front door as I headed out for my first day of 6th grade. A dark blue polo shirt with popped collar, blue jeans, brand new dark brown Sperry Top-Siders (similar to the ones pictured here), and bright pink neon-colored socks was the outfit for the day. (Yes, I was a tomboy back then.) I'm sure my mom was wondering what the heck I was thinking when I put that outfit together. She was always very supportive of my sense of style, so all she did was smile and wave goodbye.

Pink neon socks with brown Top-Siders?!? I'm so glad none of my school mates took a picture of me with that outfit on.

I did love those pink neon socks, though, and decided to wear them with everything. Then I got a pair of yellow neon socks and wore them out.

For whatever reason I really did not want to see this neon trend come back. But how could I deny something that I loved so much back in the 80's? I was close to buying a really cute neon pink striped shirt I saw in this store the other day, but I just kept wondering if a woman my age could actually pull it off.

Instead, I decided to have a little fun with neon orange nail polish. I'm going to attempt to wear this polish by POP Beauty (~$10) all weekend.  They have some vibrant colors for the summer.

I'm actually having fun watching my fingers as I type up this post...

Here's an article over at Refinery 29 that offers some tips on how to wear neon...

New Beauty Resource:

Do you radiate beauty?

Need tips and advice to live a healthier, more beautiful life?

Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Michael Roizen have joined forces to create, a new beauty resource with a mission to help women improve their inner and outer beauty.

Here’s how it works: At YouBeauty, you can take various quizzes that examine all the factors that affect your beauty. There are quizzes on happiness, stress, sleep quality, physical activity levels, skin and hair health, along with tools that find your face shape, facial symmetry and body shape, among others.

Your score on each quiz will be compiled to measure your YouQ™. Through an ongoing series of personalized action steps based on your quiz results, you’ll be encouraged to improve your YouQ™ to reach your full beauty potential, while learning about yourself in new and important ways.

I took the brief Happiness Quiz where I learned that I'm generally a very happy person. I was also given the suggestion to meditate at least 5 minutes a day and show gratitude to maintain my happiness.

Unlike other beauty-related resources that offer tips and advice, I like YouBeauty because it helps you with the emotional and psychological aspects of beauty.  For me, that's more important than learning what the best lipsticks are.  Don't get me wrong though, I still like reading regular beauty magazines, but in my opinion, the best beauty tips and advice are those that help bring out who you truly are on the inside.

The Best Travel Accessory

If you're jet setting around the country or across continents this summer, there's one travel accessory that I highly recommend packing in your purse or carry-on:  a light-weight scarf.

Between airplanes and airports, temperatures can change dramatically.  Sometimes it can get a tad bit cold on an airplane, so I always make sure to have a scarf and a light sweater handy.

During my vacation last month, I took my scarf from The Shawl Shop everywhere I went.  It's lightweight and a great stylish travel accessory even in warm weather.  I'm wearing the "Paige" style in lime green...

What is your favorite travel accessory?

Shea Terra Organics Cape Aloe Topical Healing Gel: Your Skin's Best Friend

After basking in the sun all day, your skin needs nourishment to stay soft and moisturized.   If you have a nasty sunburn, I highly recommend Shea Terra Organics' Cape Aloe Topical Healing Gel.  A sample bottle was waiting for me when I got back from my vacation to Hawaii and Miami.  Needless to say, I got a major tan from hanging out at the beaches every day, so this healing gel came at just the right time.

Cape Aloe is a plant that is related to aloe vera, but contains several times the amount of aloin as aloe vera.  It also requires no fertilizers or pesticides and is sustainably harvested.  The outer leaves of Cape Aloe contain the healing jelly that is used to work miracles on the skin.  Whether it's a rash, acne, or sunburn, this topical gel will help stop the pain and inflammation.

I've been using this on my skin ever since I came back from vacation and I haven't had to use so much moisturizer or lotion.  It's a great alternative to sunscreen, since I don't use sunscreen at all.  If you're wondering why, I recommend reading this article on sunscreen dangers.

The Cape Aloe Topical Healing Gel has a distinct smell that is very familiar, but I can't seem to pinpoint exactly what it is. What comes to mind is grapefruit for some reason. It doesn't smell bad at all, though, and once you apply it to the skin, the scent goes away.

Ingredients include:  99% Cape Aloe, xanthum gum (natural thickener), potassium sorbate (mild preservative), and sodium benzoate (mild preservative).

Why Have a Spa Day?

Spa Day
As I get older, I’m realizing just how important it is to take some time out for myself to just relax and have fun. It’s taken awhile to get used to because for so many years I have been always on the go and keeping busy. Little did I know how all that wear and tear on my body has affected my health and how old I look. Now I’ve incorporated spa days as a way for my mind, body, and soul to reconnect. I always leave refreshed and re-energized.

Spas are abundant in just about every city in the world. It’s the universal way to leave the hustle and bustle of the busy world and relax. If you’re doing a search for “spa deals London”, you’ve probably heard of The Sanctuary which caters exclusively to women. You can treat yourself or give gift vouchers to someone you know who you think really needs a day at the spa :)

When I used to think of spa days, I pictured just getting a message and that’s it. However, the spa experience is so much more than that. Spas offer so many different amenities and services such as sauna rooms, rooms to just sit and relax with a book while sipping on refreshments and snacks, facials, jacuzzi spas, and more. How can you deprive yourself of these luxuries?

So many people have this perception that going to the spa is just something that superficial rich people do for fun. Believe me, you don’t have to be rich or “privileged” to enjoy a spa day. There are so many physical and psychological benefits of going to the spa including detox, stress management, and healthy skin. If I was a doctor, I would prescribe going to the spa at least twice a month rather than giving patients pills with all those crazy side effects.

If going to the spa and being touched by people doesn’t sound too appealing, then why not just create the spa experience at home? Buy yourself a nice, fluffy towel, your favorite beauty products, some nice bath salts, and just relax at home...

I think my next vacation adventure will be a destination spa resort where I can stay for a few days and enjoy the full experience of being pampered and doing fun things that promote health and wellness. Now that’s my idea of a real vacation. This will help me get my creative mojo back!
