3 Cute, Timeless Jackets to Invest In

Jackie O, the classic beauty, was often seen in a trench coat...

Besides black boots, one of my favorite items to shop for during fall and winter is a nice, warm jacket. You’re probably wondering why someone who lives in sunny weather all year round would even think of jackets, but trust me, it does get a little chilly here in San Diego during the “winter”. Besides, I do travel up to Canada and San Francisco, so jackets are a must in these areas.

There are three types of jackets that I think every woman should invest in. They might be a bit pricey, but these are timeless pieces so you won’t have to buy them every year.

So who else is addicted to Instagram?

I have to admit that the Instagram app is one of the major reasons why I bought an iPhone in the first place. I love to take pictures and my trusty Blackberry was just not cutting it. I want to be able to take a picture, edit it right away, and post it to Twitter or Facebook. Besides, Instagram’s filters can make any picture look good instantly.

The Hunt For Holiday Party Dresses Begins

Can you believe that the holidays are just around the corner again?

I just took inventory of potential party dresses and realized that I only have one party dress that you would consider "festive". I have another dress that I wore to a birthday party for my fiancé's grandma, which is somewhat plain and conservative. Then I have the classic LBD, but...*yawn*

So instead of waiting til last minute to shop for a fun party dress this year like I usually do, I'm going to take my time and take in all the options I have. Here are a few ideas for those of you who are shopping early too...

DIY Fashion Inspiration

Have you ever tried using upholstery fabric for clothing or fashion accessories? How about using unexpected items in fashion?

I don’t consider myself a DIY fashionista - well, except for jewelry - but I recently just started following Jenni of I Spy DIY and Erica of P.S. I Made This on Instagram and Pinterest, which has spurred my inner crafty girl to get out the glue gun. We live in an era of throwaway fashion, so I appreciate people who use their creativity to reuse, reinvent, or find a cheaper way to recreate fashion that you see on the runways.

Gemstone Jewelry: Not Just For Fashion

Songea yellow sapphire sterling silver ring
When I first started making jewelry, I chose beads and gemstones just for their colors and shapes, but as I learn more about the different types of stones, their metaphysical properties, and how they can be used to heal your body, making jewelry and shopping for jewelry has taken on a whole new meaning.

Everything we wear contains energy. If you understand color psychology and that colors give off certain types of energies, then it's easy to grasp the idea that stones and crystals also contain powerful energies that can be beneficial for the body.

Using gemstones for therapy and healing has been around for thousands of years. Whatever issue or ailment you have - whether it's physical, emotional, or spiritual - there is a stone or crystal that can help. For example, you can wear jasper for self-confidence. Feeling depressed? Wear citrine to promote happiness.

Fall 2012 Fashion Inspiration: Menswear

This is a menswear inspired look that I love!

Up until recently I’ve spent most of my time browsing women’s fashion sites for wardrobe inspiration. Of course, most of these fashion sites talk about the latest fashion trends for women and what celebrities are wearing, which is fine, but I just want to expand your mind just a little bit today by offering some inspiration from menswear.

Finding fashion inspiration from men is nothing new. Yves St. Laurent did that back in the 70’s with the classic tuxedo suit, and many women have often found that wearing the “boyfriend jean” is much more fitting and comfortable than regular women’s jeans. Then there’s the iconic button-down shirt that’s a staple for all working women worldwide.

I’ve been reading that for this fall 2012, the menswear look for women is business and casual suits, but when has this never been a trend?

Autumn Cool

Fall Work Outfits

With the leaves on the trees now having turned all the golds, rusts and browns, and bright colours of the autumn, it’s time to turn to your wardrobe and review what you need to renew. Dresses are the big fashion story of the autumn and winter of 2012, with a glorious choice of looks and styles to choose from. The looks of the season - from Gothic to minimalist, from demure country chic to OTT lace and glitter – and hem lengths, ranging from maxi to the tiniest of mini skater skirts, give you an endless range of choice.

If you’re an organized wardrobe sorter, then your work wear is likely to come first to hand. Those dresses and skirts that looked so up-to-the-minute last year are likely to be less fetching when you review them in the light of the new trends. Fashion this autumn is perfect for that efficient-yet-fun look for the office.

Sharply tailored peplum dresses in deep greys and russets with deep necklines can be brightened up with a pair of peep-toe stiletto heels. The line is sleek and subtle, with soft jersey material or draped cross-overs creating the interest. Hints are to team demure with fun, like the range of animal print dresses in the Oasis collection. Zebra patterns, snakeskin and exotic butterflies give pencil dresses an exotic look. Waists are cinched in with narrow leather belts, or emphasized by wide contrasting material belts with over-size buckles.

An Experience at Bellus Academy Beauty School

In my last post I talked about the different ways that you can save on hair services, and to show that you can get a good haircut even at a discount price, I got my hair done at a local beauty school called Bellus Academy.

I was a little hesitant at first, but I just wanted a simple haircut and highlights, so I thought that would be easy enough for a beauty school student.

Right before I went to my appointment, I completely changed my mind about the haircut - opting to chop off the long hair that I've had for a few years now. I was ready for a change. I also decided that I wanted a low-maintenance hair color, so after talking with a friend, I figured an ombre look would be best.

5 Ways to Save on Haircuts and Other Hair Services

10 inches was cut off!

One of the easiest ways you can give yourself a completely new look is to get a haircut or new hair color. I’ve just done this drastic change myself, and I’m excited to share it with you within the next couple days. In the meantime, check out all the hair that was chopped off in the picture to the right...

So, who says that you have to shell out all that hard-earned money to get a decent haircut nowadays? You can still find great deals and save money whether your looking for hair salons in London, New York, San Francisco, or any other major city.

Here are 5 ways that you can save on your next haircut or hair service:

Luxurious Timepieces

Vintage cocktail watch
"I must govern the clock, not be governed by it." --Golda Meir

In a world where we have the technology like phones and computers that can tell us what time it is, watches have become products bought for style and looks more than function.

As I've mentioned before, I don't buy watches very often. I tend to shop for watches like I'm shopping for a piece of art. When I do see something I like, such as a few of these luxury watches by Longines, it's usually of the high end variety. So unless I inherit a large sum of money soon, I'll have to keep on adding to my "Watch Wishlist".

Willa Naturals For Girls: You're Never Too Young to Take Care of Your Skin

Willa travel kit

Gather a group of women in their 30's and 40's and most likely the subject of skincare will come up. Sharing skincare tips, experiences, and product recommendations have been topics of conversations with my close friends, and as I get older I realize the importance of taking care of your skin on a daily basis.

If you're a mom to a young girl, I think it's important to stress skincare now and to buy your daughter products that support your mindset. Fortunately, there are products like Willa Skincare that are specifically made for young girls - and it was developed by a young entrepreneur too!

What Are the Best Sunglasses Styles?

 My sunglasses collection

Can someone have too many sunglasses? Sunglasses are a summer fashion staple, but when you live in an area like San Diego as I do, having a collection of sunglasses year round is considered pretty normal. I did an inventory of my sunglass collection and realized that I generally stick with one or two styles, so maybe it’s time to try something new.

It seems as if retro styles have made a comeback this year - think cat-eye and square shaped - but I find myself gravitating more towards contemporary styles and liking this selection of sunglasses.

It'’s exciting times in shoe fashion. There are more choices in shoe styles than ever before this autumn, and whether you are looking to buy boots for casual wear or party pumps, there’'s a feast of colours and designs to choose from. Turn Summer Dresses Into Fall Outfits

While many of us are putting away or storing summer dresses, I still like to wear dresses during the fall and winter. I live in San Diego where we don’t freeze our butts off, so wearing summer dresses is still ok. However, for those cooler days, there are still ways that you can pull off those dresses like the ones offered by Nataya.

As I’ve mentioned several times before, fall is my favorite time of the year simply because we finally get to layer clothing. I love to wear cozy sweaters, jackets, stockings, and scarves. Oh, and boots! Can’t forget the boots.

The One Thing You Should Do Before Bra Shopping

Polka Dot Bra

Ever since I’ve seen Oprah’s “Bra Intervention” episode, I’ve been conscious of the bras that I wear and buy. I’ve mentioned before that I used to wear bras that were too big, but I would also wear them too small or they just did not fit well at all.

Chances are, you’re one of the 80% of women who are wearing the wrong bra size.

Because it is breast cancer awareness month, I thought I’d dedicate a post to taking care of our breasts - and one of the ways that we can do that is to make sure to have adequate protection and support for “the twins”.

Why Designers and Celebrities Should Not Do Low End Handbag Collections

Jennifer Lopez handbags at Kohl's

Warning: Small rant ahead :)

It's been awhile since I've been department store shopping, and I was curious to see what designers besides Vera Wang were being represented at Kohl's. I had done a review of Vera Wang's makeup for Kohl's, but I haven't seen the clothing or handbags.

To preface, I'll just say that I'm somewhat of a handbag snob. I used to work in Nordstrom's handbag department and have touched and handled some of the most exquisite handbags. I've seen quality handbags from price points $100 and up.

Source: bloom.com via Julie on Pinterest

If your beauty look is natural most of the year, sometimes you just want to try out something new and dramatic. I’ve been brainstorming ideas of what dramatic makeup look I’m going to try out. What better time to do this than Halloween?

If you want a truly dramatic look, you could probably try all three of these suggestions!

Discover the Perfect Fall Skirt

Fall Skirts

Although fall is here and wearing pants may be the order of the day, in areas like Southern California where I live, skirts - even short skirts - are still ok to wear. However, even if you do live in cooler weather, you can still wear skirts with thick tights and boots.

What I love about fall in particular is that skirts can come in all types of fabrics such as wool, corduroy, or denim whereas in the spring and summer you generally only have cotton or a light polyester blend material to work with.

So, what would be the perfect fall skirt for you? Here are a few women’s skirts styles to consider adding to your wardrobe.
